Hi All,

Can anyone explain to me how to use the tounge extention that came with my trailer? Clamped onto my trailer is a 6 or 8 foot long square tube with a ball on one end. Presumably the ball goes into the socket on the trailer and the other end fits into the receiver on my truck. But it seems to me that nothing is holding up that extension? I have a picture of the extension below, shown under the forward, port side, circled in red. If you notice also, there is a small wheel clamped to the crossbeam that supports the bow roller, also highlighted in red. Is the little wheel boat supposed to provide the support? If so, it seems that if the trailer was lowered to the ground where the little wheel would be holding the boat up, the front of the trailer would be too low to properly hook up to the extention which would be locked into the receiver on the truck.

Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Hard to see it all in the picture. It would be nice to have a picture of just the two items.

This set up may not have been designed or work for your particular vehicle.
If you try setting it all up try hooking the extention up before lowering the trailer.
In addition some boaters use the front trailer jack/wheel to roll the trailer. This can be trouble if the ramp is not smooth as the jack might bend easy.

The tongue extension on my EZ Loader is a pretty beefy piece of 3X4" tubing.

Unless you have a really light tongue weight it seems like the smaller 'receiver sized' tubing would bend unless it has some additional support (like a dolly wheel)

Do you have any sense of how much tongue weight you have? I suppose you could just hitch up and give it a try. As you lower the tongue jack you'll get a sense if it's going to work.

I do think that little drop wheel is there to carry the load one way or another. Does it have any sort of height adjustment on it?

I have one of those nifty tounge extensions. I gotta tell you that the first time I extended it for launch, I doubted its strength. There's a lot of "flexibility" in that thing! But I only hook it up about 30 yards from the ramp. I've launched and retreived many times and I'm a lot more confident in its strength now.
The biggest problem that I have with the extension is that the trailer and the tongue extension require two different size hitch balls. Its easily handled with a second ball but its kind of a pain. So, while I'm extending the tongue, I have to remember to swap hitches.
I have to admit that the extension makes floating on and off nice. On my old boat (ODay) I used to have to back my vehicle half way into the water to get her to float off. But not anymore!
Preparing to trailer up to Lake Michigan for a long voyage next week. I am not looking forward to pulling nearly 7000 pounds 150 miles! But it will be well worth it when we set sail!
