Hi all,

Yup, I'm talking about my buddy Paul Zell.

I went with my wife and daughter to the SF Maritime Museum, near Ghirardelli Square, on Father's Day. Kirsten told me that Paul's picture was in the radio communication section.

There he was. The display explains the use of Morse Code and how it has been replaced by modern com devices. Paul was one of the last telegraphers to send a commercial message to a ship at sea.

It is a neat museum, made neater by having a C25 owner in it.

Paul's boat is "Sparky", naturally, the nickname for a telegrapher or radio operator.

I had come across this sometime back. I couldn't find the link to my old post, so here are the actual links from the other sites.

Paul Zell, Coastal Station Operator

Paul began his communications career with the Army Security Agency as a Morse intercept operator. In 1962, he moved into commercial radio at the present KFS site as a "Radio Operator A". After one year, Paul became a full fledged radio operator working KFS/KTK. Paul was also completing his college education during this time. After graduation, he decided to transfer to Seattle Radio KLB. At KLB, Paul’s responsibilities were to oversee radio operations, act as transmitter technician and the service clerk. In 1983, Paul returned to KFS where he resumed his duties as a radio operator, Sitor operator and service clerk. Throughout the last sixteen years, Paul has experienced first hand the progression of communication as Globe Wireless grew from one (KFS) straight forward CW/Sitor operation to three (WCC, WNU, KPH) CW stations worldwide using the innovations that have evolved.
