Anyone using one of the satellite radios on the boat? I like to listen to NPR news in the morning, and a lot of the gunkholes we stay at have poor or non-existent radio signals. I’m wondering how well the satellite radio works, and if I can move it from boat to car.
In a similar, electro-toy vein, anyone use a DVD on board? My crew is usually younger than 13. I’m thinking one of those little portable DVDs with an attached 6” LCD screen might keep them a little happier during long runs.

I hate to admit it (& I'm the one who bought it) we have a portable DVD player so we can watch a movie on board. It was wonderful a few weekends ago when it rained most of Saturday. Make sure you get one with enough battery life to make it through a whole movie if you're not going to be plugging it in.

Lap Top /DVD . I bought a refurbished lap top computer with docking station. Not only can we watch Captain Ron, Message in a bottle or what have you the younger set can play games. In addition to that I have two nave programs loaded. Fugawi and Map Source. I have downloaded seven charts from NOAA free of charge. Softchart of Puget Sound downloads at $8:50 a copy. Im interfaced with my Garmin 45 and have a moving map,tracking. I can import maps to Fugawi and overlay them into the program. National Geographic Topo maps. One in the marina I can patch into the phone lines and send E mail etc. Cant wait to get an auto pilot and interface it too and eventualy get the radar unit out of the garage and put it in too. So Many projects So little time. Doug I would be glad to show you the set up and how it works. As for a portable DVD player yep the daughter has one and uses it. I almost forgot. The lap top is 15V DC and wont work on just a streight cigarette lighter addaptor so I bought a voltage booster 12 to whatever you need adjustable. Mine is set to 15VDC. Usualy they are around $95 but I found them on the internet for $28.

Just add "Wind" and "Dead Calm" to the DVD collection on board and you are in Heaven.

You're familiar with the marketing term "creation of demand?" XM radio is a good example . . . I've grown weary of more and more enterprises trying to get into my pocket.
Why not try a VHF/FM splitter on a mast top antenna?

I have the movie Wind also on DVD. Just got it. Captain Ron was 5:95 at Walmart.

"Captain Ron" was a hoot. Should have been subtitled, "How NOT to Get Your First Sailboat". I agree with Douglas about a Laptop. Much more versatile than a DVD player, with a better, larger screen, and basic models are finally available for under 10 BU's. Just keep in mind that computers are not marinized and that the salty environment in a boat will adversely affect it, especially the electrical connectors of the various data i/o ports and the power connector for the battery. I would not bring an expensive, high-end laptop onto a boat, at least not in salt water. On a fresh water lake it would be okay as long as you don't splash it. Are there laptops that run on 12V directly, so you can use them in a boat or RV, without need of special adapters or inverters?
