I am a Catalina 22 sailor - a Catalina 25 wannabe - and an avid admirer of this web site.
Any suggestions on what might be necessary to set up a similar site for the Catalina 22 community? Right now we have a pretty good e-mail network - but it pales by comparison with this site.
(Some specific questions - is the software expensive? How much time does it take to administer the web site? Is it a hassle? (I recall the conflicts on the old Trailer Sailor website - it didn't look like Tod, the web master was having a good time.)
It's nice that the forum is self administering and takes no time. The rest of the web site itself is turning into about 2 to 3 hours per day of work for your intrepid web master - Spike (my wife). We don't deal with the $ but the hosting costs about $25/month. I think buying the forum software would be about $1500 and setting everything up would take a dedicated and knowledgable volunteer about 2 weeks of labor.
Perhaps the C22 group could pay the C25/250 group some $ on an annual basis and we could set up a "C22" forum on this site and you could link to it.

<b>"How much does Snitz Forum 2000 cost?
Nothing. It's Freeware. You can download a copy from this website at no charge. All that is required is to retain the "Powered By: Snitz Forums 2000" statement at the bottom of each page (this can be either text or a graphic). Also, make sure you leave the copyright notices intact in the source code and retain the GPL.txt file."</b>
You can see and click on the Snitz logo at the bottom of each page on this forum. The Catalina 22 National Sailing Association seems to have a very well designed website. I’m sure the resident guru could figure out how to incorporate the Snitz Forum into their web site.

At one time, the C22 National Association was fiercely independent… may still be. Unhappy that they were the largest association but given only equal treatment of space in the Mainsheet, they broke away. For a few years, there was no or little C22 representation in the Mainsheet though I’ve noted some of late.
I see John’s suggestion for a forum of their own on their server as a good solution for them. Quite frankly, I’ve wondered for some time why they still use the email reflector system. In the early days of email…those systems worked ok…but I can’t imagine now wading through that amount of email.
The OziExplorer support group offers email reflecting and I thought… this could be good for the occasional concern about the charting software I use. WRONG… and trying to get loose from it wasn’t pleasant. After three weeks and multiple times following the given instructions for discontinued mailings… a kind soul said there was another way to handle it… stop it a Yahoo which was doing the reflecting… that worked…sigh!

Before we invite that large group into a separate forum here, let's make sure we can handle the traffic. I've noticed some times (presumably more popular times for our readers) when response has slowed considerably. Occasionally, the forums act like they don't want to let me in... Maybe I should take that as a hint? <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>
Another thing... If they were mad that they couldn't dominate Mainsheet, does that mean they'll be trying to take our place over, too? "Indepdent", huh? Makes me wonder...

I know virtually nothing about websites, but have had some experience with organizations. I have absolutely no doubt that C22'ers have a knowledgeable enough reservoir of members as to have a website of their own similar to the C25/250 if they wished to, and when they do, we 25'ers can visit just as we can visit the 27 site. I would view it as a mistake to join the 22 and 25 sites together, but then...I said I was ignorant, right? Ron srsk #2343 Orion SW FL

Let me say that Karen and I would never do the merging or creation of a new C22 forum on this site without direction from the President and Treasurer of the C25/C250 national association.

The C30 group is still using the old email listserve too. I joined for a while to learn about the model that might be our next boat, but couldn't keep up with the threads. Its astounding that the C30 group (thousands of owners I'm sure) don't have a Forum or Bulletin Board. Same amazement w/ the C22 group. I wish them luck - a forum like this is a great resource.
In the beginning (as far back as I am aware of anyway), it was the association's good fortune to be hosted on the Trailer Sailor site as a separate forum, just as the C-27 folks are now. Uncertainty over the future of T/S (which has now gone commercial) led our leadership to seek an independent solution that would be at least as useful as the T/S forum. Mark Melchior and others are responsible for this solution, and we owe them many thanks! Jim and Karen carry on our great tradition. But we can attribute much of this to an early decision to not be too "independent" and accept the hosting services of Trailer Sailor.
From what I've heard and read, I suspect part of the C-22 problem is the division between the hard-core racers and the ordinary sailors. My impression is that neither "group" has much use for the other.

Division is certainly dysfunctional, and sets groups at odds with each other. But to me it seems that IF these groups would choose to work together, just a little, the c22 folks could have a forum similar to ours, and they could have sections for racing, cruising, daysailing, etc. But who am I to think of this, just an outsider who at one time had a red c22 that was not even part of the association.

Our good forum has a lot to do with what our National Association is. Like most democracies in action, it came at some cost.
Around '97-'98 there was some division between racing and other types. The precipitating cause was the forum started by Jeff Pierce. The open forum brought day sailors, cruisers and new owners together who became disenchanted with a National Association who’s leadership was focused on racing to the point that Association funds paid the expenses for those racing officers and perpetuated the status quo by electing officers among only those who participated in the National Regatta. A member didn’t have a vote, unless they attended.
When dissenting began, the forum even saw censoring of those voices. Jeff Pierce the founder of our web site resigned in protest of the censorship. Mark Melchoir quickly provided an alternate forum and over a period of time, many changes took place. Open nominations and elections with every member able to vote, a rewrite of our constitution, and divestiture of the stipends paid to officer racers resulted.
The spirit of a group of people is often the result of the leavening within the lump. Our association has been fortunate to have many good sailors… good people.
Though he is far too humble to appreciate me doing this, I’ll take a moment of personal privilege and suggest to the group that a hallmark of what the Association is today is because of one such character. He obviously has a love for his C25, and without question has a spirit of helpfulness to fellow sailors. Witnessed literally hundreds upon hundreds of times over the years are his helpful, accurate, and wise offerings. He has served the association as officer, Association editor for the Mainsheet, and Association technical editor. He played a strong role in the rewrite of our constitution. Not long ago, he took on the rewrite of design class racing rules, which included the needed additions for the C250. He is a past Catalina dealer. He is a racer, cruiser, day sailor and sailing enthusiast. He has written not only extensively in past Mainsheets but also has many offerings listed in the tech and cruising sections. He is a teacher by profession and spirit. His teaching skills are manifest in classroom, sailing lessons and other interest such as skiing. Talking with him on the phone yields a kind and gentle voice always portraying his warm spirit towards sailing and fellow sailors. He is one of those… that make others lives richer for the knowing. It is our good fortune that he is one of ours.
Most of you by this time will know whom I speak … Bill Holcomb
If he were the guest speaker at a future Nationals banquet… it would be a must attend event.

Bill has been more quiet in the last year or so, as he warned us he would be... But knowing that he was out there on this forum was no small part of our decision to buy the C-25. That kind of knowledge, support, and helpfulness is a rare commodity. He makes the new or propsective owner feel very welcome to the group--judging from my post count, maybe too welcome! <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>
Of course, Arlyn has certainly taken up the banner for the C-250 side of the organization, and has regaled us with his accounts of cruises on the upper Great Lakes! Thanks to you, Arlyn, and to Derek, Don, "Clam", Leon, Duane, Steve, Buzz, Ed, Brooke, Charles, our esteemed alumni, Doug and Ruth, and........... (Now I'm in trouble--there're too many!) <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>
