Hi all,

Sorry for the bit*h but from time to time posts here are wider than I can accomodate and reading them is overtaxing my abilities. Do any of you know of a simple solution to this problem? It seems I'd need a 35 inch monitor to handle the posts.

Val,

I've noticed that when people post pictures with a wide width, or two next to each other that I the problem you described. I agree that it's a pain to scroll through the post to read the whole message, but I don't know how to handle it, other than encouraging picture posters to post them beneath each other, on the left side of the page. That said, the final placement of the picture may be something that happens in the etheral space of the internet. Maybe it would help to include a description of each picture, under the picture, before posting another. I don't know.

I feel it is considerate (but easy) to "shrink" pictures to just smaller than an ordinary screen size and put them on their own line in order to minimize the scrolling others have to do.

The greatest single cause of horizontal scrolling that I've noticed is long URLs. Here's my attempt at explaining how to avoid causing that particular problem.

When you want to include a link, first click on "Mode", then set it to [Prompt]. When you then click on the insert-a-link icon, you will be prompted for a description of the link. Don't worry about getting the description perfect on the first try, you will have the opportunity to edit it later. Next, you will be prompted for the actual URL of the link (h t t p / / w w w . w h a t e v e r . c o m) type or paste in the link. When you're done, you'll see the whole thing formatted in your message edit window. You can then tweek the description, cut, paste, etc. to get the results you want. In the final version the rest of us see, only the description will appear -- the actual URL, no matter how long and convoluted, will be hidden and will not cause horizontal over run. Don't forget to always, always, use the [Preview] option.

If you're still not sure how to proceed, go to the practice forum, and fool around until it either works, or you decide Leon was full of it (and perhaps not for the first time <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>).

Also, as we ran into recently, really long 'words', such as long strings of punctuation symbols, or huge numbers, or math formulas without spaces, can cause the same need for horizontal scrolling.

When you make a new topic or reply to an existing topic there is a SCREENSIZE selection at the top of the box. It may be that some people are using very high pixel numbers to post messages. Then if you are only using 800x600 you cannot view the whole message box without scrolling. That's my theory. I think I'll try this reply in a higher resolution and see if that is in fact what happens.
