Yep, I was cleaning the hull when I noticed the rudder slightly moving back and forth at the lower Grudgen. The bushing that the pintle slides into is loose from the Grudgen plate. I am not even sure when it broke or how long I sailed that way. I called Catalina and Ordered a new one..Cost $18.00 +3.60 shipping, Recieved it in 3 days here in Austin, Tx. I will install it tomorrow, it came with all new ss screws, washers, and nuts. I think I will take my old one and have the bushing re-welded to the plate so I can have a spare onboard, Steve
Your hull number might have had the earlier gudgeons which had the bearing only brazed to the plates. The later ones have a weld bead around the bearing. Hull numbers prior to Steve's should check their gudgeons for the weld bead and if not there... can expect a failure of the lower and possibly the upper gudgeon.
OK, I replaced the grudgen today, it took about 1 hour. I stopped by Sears and bought a 20" rachet extension so I would not have to crawl into the stern area behind the battery. I took off all three nuts which came off easily, then I went topside and screwed off all three screws from the backing plate..this was simple as well. I pulled the clevis pin and the old Grudgen dropped into my hand. I am doing all this in my slip so I have to be go slow and be careful not to contribute any more tools to Canyon Lake Neptune!..I applied some marine silicon caulking then I dove back below and held the backing plate while the Admiral used a philips to start all three screws into the backing plate. Pretty easy so far... then I went top side to tighten all three screws. That done, I went back down to install the lock washers and nuts on the screws and the whole operation was about 1 hour...I of course had to put the AC in the front Hatch before all this since the heat index was 107 degrees today, and I had a fan blowing into the aft berth to make sure the cool air was reaching my finger tips as I was working about. Then we sailed on the 4th Wed. evening Beer Run and the Admiral had the Helm almost all the way through..the winds were 8-15 with gust to 20+. We reefed to the first reefing point and 100% JIB to make the admiral Happy. We placed 4/5 ....the admiral usualy ask for the Main to be sheeted out when we approach 15 degrees of heel...but today she was commanding to leave the main sheated in to take advantage of the lifts! By the time we got to the third leg, down wind she wanted all the sails out...I think she is ready for the July 5th ladies race at Canyon Lake!...She did go to sleep early tonight however, Forever summer winds, Steve
