. . . WOULD IMPROVE THIS ALREADY GREAT WEBSITE!

Every so often people here post web addresses for some really beneficial websites . . . could we have a <i>permanent</i> links section too?

O.J.,

Well, you know what they say about complainers in an all volunteer organization!<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> So when can we expect you to have that permanent links section ready for us to use?<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Me? I'm too busy writing up my adventure to the Abacos, as requested by the board.

Hi OJ

There is a "Links" page on the Home page. You can certainly submit links to be added to the Webmaster(s) but they have been super busy updating and improving the website. (One of the thankless jobs because no one really sees all the work that is done.) We haven't done much to improve that section in the past so it is a good idea...

Who's complaining <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>
I thought there was an informal round of solicitation a few weeks back looking for ways to further improve the site?
The primary objective behind any of my suggestions have been to preserve and ease the access of the invaluable information that we have contributed here. As all of us will eventually move on - wouldn't be nice to know that this knowledge will carry on to serve others?
In my case it isn't a question of donating services - if my career skills included those of IT I would most probably be the current web editor . . .
In defense of past and current web editors, I understand we are using a canned package . . . and there may simply be too much work involved to customize it on a volunteer basis. Maybe it's entirely the wrong package to even consider modifiying.
Whew! I feel better now <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> !

O.J.,

I wasn't trying to criticize you, I was just kidding!<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> (Except about writing up the Abacos trip, I really am working on that.)

Yes, I wish there were a better way to preserve the collective Catalina 25/250 wisdom that passes through here.

Back when we were using Todd J's Trailer Sailor servers and software, I suggested that maybe once a year the Catalina 25/250 archives be burned to CD-ROM, along with the software to search and access them. Those CD-ROMs could then be offered for sale to help defray the cost of supporting the website. I assume the Trailer Sailor servers' Catalina 25/250 archives didn't get backed up at all, let alone in a user friendly format. So all that accumulated wisdom has likely now gone to the great hard drive in the sky.

I've also suggested raising the membership dues if needed to fund improvements to the website.

I guess we will all just keep winging it as we go along. I figure we're still one of the best sailboat owner's organizations going.

Karen and I know that the many of the links on the association web page "links" section are broken. Neither of us has had time to track these all down and get a page of working links. Be fore warned that on any page of links some fraction will always be broken, so this has been a low priority.

Feel free to submit a link to us as you would any tech tip.

If anyone wants to volunteer to validate all the links on our links page it would be greatly appreciated.

Oscar and Arlyn have been keeping Karen busy, plus she is working on something for the recent nationals, and trying to complete migration of all web content to one hosting site.

She has 2 teenage kids out of school, band camp, paying web site customers, and only 2 weeks to go before leaving on our cruise, so extra volunteer help is greatly appreciated!

Hey Jim,
I'll volunteer to track the links and update the Links page. Just one caveat: I'm taking next week off so I won't be able to get it done until the week of July 7th.

What I'll do is copy the source code make the updates and additions and then email you the html file. I'd think it would plug right back in without any broken image tags or anything.

Anyone want to send me useful links - email me at mason_jo@leg.wa.gov or jamason@qwest.net with the link URL pasted into the body of the email.

Just updated the Links page. Not many new ones; just fixing/updating the broken links. I emailed it back to Spike. If I get suggestions for new URLs I'll add those and email the updated html file again.

I'm out for a week, so don't expect to see anything 'til July 10th or so.
