The inspection port is by far the easiest solution for the uppper gudgeon. The lower one can usually be accessed from inside the boat....either from the portside cockpit compartment or from the quarterberth inside the main cabin.
I had the same problem and found it very painful cutting into that nice clean glass. I did it but now I'm thinking even that was a mistake. I'd say if you can leave the top gudgeon alone, do it. I suspect it's the bottom bits that are doing all the hea
