I have seen in tech tips where several people have extended the seat on the s-board setee and pushed the backrest out as well. I have been thinking of doing this project. Very few adults can sit here without their head banging on the cabin sides. I think you all know what I am talking about, and how uncomfortable it is. The setee is basically useless for anyone much over 5' tall. I have some ideas on how to appraoch this project, but I would like to hear from some of you. I am thinking of framing the back out with 1x4 and the seat with 2x4, but I'm not sure 3.5" will be enough to keep heads clear of the cabin house. I am also concerned that going any wider will make the companionway to narrow for comfortable walking room. Any advice would be much appreciated. Also any problems you ran into along the way. So many of my simple projects have become very complicated once under way.

I would be too...
I wonder if you could make a padded 'swing up' extension to the seat area? Lays down against the settee when not in use, swings up and locks when people want to sit there. You'd still lose a little navigation room between the table and settee, but maybe not as much as a permanent extension.

Here's what we did, and it makes a big difference.
(1) Get rid of the settee back cushions (where your back would rest when sitting down). (2) Get a whole bunch of throw pillows (I think we have about 10 of different sizes). (3) When you are sitting down, put 2 pillows behind you. This moves your body out enough that you don't hit your head while still leaving enough room for your bottom. (4) Adjust pillows as necessary when you move around.
It's much more comfortable and homey. Plus the pillows add a splash of color!
Skipper' Do the pillows end up all over the place when you sail. I like your solution and appreciate the resopnse. But I am still leaning towards building the seat and backrest out. I have also seen tech tips where people have cut open the hull liner behind the backrest cushion for added storage space. I could use the storage and will probably do this project at the same time. Of course they have to work their way to the top of a very long to do list. Shawn 1980 C25 tr/fk #1960
Clambeach, Interesting idea. But the backrest is more of a problem than the seat. The folding seat exstension in combination with building out the backrest is worthy of some thought. It will help keep an already narrow companionway as wide as possible. Shawn 1980 C25 tr/fk #1960
