Greetings! We are new to cruising and new to alcohol stoves. Our 1976 Catalina 27"s alcohol stove works but creates a large puddle of alcohol at the base of the tray below the burner when we first turn it on. Of course it flames up but then reduces and finally disappears as we cook. One burner seems better with this reduction of puddling than the other. Should we rebuild the stove? Is it a gasket or is this normal?
The puddling is by design; it heats the burner assemblies which enables them to burn the alcohol. If you search for related words you will find previous discussions on this as well as conversion to propane.
The proper way to light the old "curtain burner" is to fill the tank 3/4 full pump ten times and the open one valve until the fuel fills the depression under the burner. Then shut the valve and light the puddle. When it dies down re open the valve and ignite the burner. Lighting the fuel in the depression under the burner warms the fuel in the generator and gassifies it making it ready to operate the burner. To do otherwise will cause flare-ups and may even burn your curtains. Hense the derogatory term, "curtain burner". Val on Calista # 3936
