There is no VHF installation on my Cat 25 at present and I am in the process of installing one. I want to mount the normal whip antenna with a Windex AV on that. The only problem is that it looks as if the masthead light will catch on the Windex. Does anyone have any ideas, or is a stand off bracket my only option. I guess there must be loads of Cat 25's with a VHF, Windex and masthead light!!
Also the lights in the mast (All round white, steaming and deck light) seem to be shorting somewhere. All the bulbs and lights work but when you try them in different combinations they go dull. I guess I have a crossed wire but does anyone have a good idea of where to start? We've checked the deck outlet, and all is it should be there, so I guess that there is a problem within the mast wiring.
I have never dropped my mast. When I bought a VHF I installed an eight-foot antenna from the rail on the port side aft of the cockpit gate. I was concerned about someone grabbing it when boarding but it has survived for seven years. I too will consider a mast antenna if I lower the mast for rigging or other work.
Last year I bought a combination antenna / windex that came supplied with a stand-off bracket. It was very simple to install, and came with ample antenna cable to reach from the top of the mast to my radio located next to the companionway. The windex cleared the masthead light with room to spare. I don't remember the manufacturer, but it seemed like a pretty common item in my boat supply store.

I'd suggest mounting the antenna/Windex AV combo on a standoff pointing aft - this will improve visibility of the vane. This will also require a longer length of coax, which isn't any big deal I guess. As you may already know Davis makes a nice, easy to install, standoff. I get fantastic reception using RG-8X coupled with the Metz MANTA6. Good luck.
