Welcome to the group, I replaced my cable this spring and it wasnt to difficult.
Some suggestions i would offer are as follows> Take note of how the cable is attached to the drum. Replace the turning ball with the cable Purchase the parts from Catalina direct Have an assistant put some load on the cable when winding it back on the drum Make sure the cable is lead through the aft most part of the turning ball Make sure you have the hose secure prior to placing the boat in the water. Put (2) new all stainless clamps on it.
unless you prefer a submarine over a sailboat you should definitely do it when ther boat is hauled. Replacing the cable is not complicated - Frank R above summed it up nicely.
Just did mine. Not a complicated job, (depending on any 'side'issues you might encounter) cable, hose, ball, clamps etc... takes about an hour.
One think Frank didn't mention is that if you still have the 'old style' attachment hardware at the keel, you should consider replacing it with the upgraded components too.
The old style is a simple bolt with a flat tang on the end. The new style is a stainless clevis/pin arrangement.
For this time around, you might see what kind of hardware you have attaching the cable to the keel and plan on renewing it off-season if it's the old style.
On my older boat, that part of the job took several hours due to the fact that the old style keel cutout didn't accomodate the new hardware without some serious sessions at the grinder.
Absolutely renew the turning ball, hose and clamps while your at it... and yes, the boat sinks if you remove the hose while in the water.
If you don't have the C25 'manual' (available from Catalina Direct) get one! Lots of essential information in there.
Currently maintaining two holes in the water...'77 Venture 23 and new to the family, '78 Catalina 25
...definately upgrade the keel lifting bracket. Catalina Direct sells it. When removed I discovered that my old style eyebolt was bent ... a breakaway waiting to happen. That will be very unlikely with the new style lifting bracket.
Make sure the threads for the bracket bolt are clean and NOT rusted. The instructions will recommend a proper torque.
I like to add silicone sealant around the base of the turning ball/cable assembly standpipe hose AND double clamps. Every other year I inspect the turning ball and cable. I replace the hose because I have to cut the old one off.
Adriatic, I just had all my swinger hardware replaced. New hinge bolt, new cable etc. I'm in the midwest and my local sailboat shop had a corner on the market but they replaced all the hardware for just under 5 boat units. That's a lot of dough but the peace of mind is worth it. I'm sure it has been done and could be done by a skipper. After reading the horror stories on this site, I kept closing my eyes and hearing the sound of my keel dropping, the hull crashing and the water bubbling up through my cabin sole. So, the 5 boat units were a good investment. By the way, I have an '84 and this was, to my knowledge, the first time the hardware had been replaced. I like the swing keel and I'm a happy skipper now!
