This fine community of sailors is run through the generous efforts of several volunteers that mange the mundane details of managing the database of members, paying bills, making sure the website runs smoothly and planning for future events.
We have had the pleasure of having excellent people like Ed Jakubas, Mark Melchior, Arlyn Stewart and Bill Holcomb serve in these roles.
Recently Ed stepped down after he and his wife moved up to a "new to them" Catalina 30. We wish him well and offer profound thanks for his service. Mark also is ready to step aside in order to devote more time to his family and business.
That means we need YOU. The officers are currently discussing the best way to manage the elections to fill these positions but I am asking for each of you to consider what you personally have to offer the Association. If you can’t help, consider who you would like to serve. Offer suggestions, nominate someone, and tell us what you don’t want, but please be involved in the process.
Thanks
Clif Thompson Treasurer C-25/250 National Association. svMoxie '81 25 sk
Clif I have no compelling need to offer myself as a candidate, but am open to serving as either the Vice Commodore or Secretary.
I had a great time at Nationals in Syracuse last month and would hope that we could have twenty or thirty boats at future Nationals, and I guess if this is going to happen, I ought to be willing to serve. So
I'll offer my hat.
Don Peet c25, 1665, osmepneo, sr/wk The Great Sacandaga Lake, NY
I'll second that "out of my mind" bit, Don. However...
Clif, I'm a finance guy and I would be glad to take over the Treasury responsibility, if you were interested in one of the other positions or desired a short break like Mark.
I know I'm new to the forum (as a poster, anyway) and so I've attached a link to my professional bio; for purposes of establishing credibility only.
I asked Clif about me nominating him for Commodore at nationals. I think he thought I was kidding. I personally think Clif would be great at that position even more so now due to the fact that J.B. Manley has offered to take over the Treasury responsibilities.

quote:
I am more than happy to remain in my current position, as long as the members don't have a problem with it.
As a new member of the association I personally want to thank all of you good folks who are volunteering your time to help keep things going.
I know I'm really busy right now (like, who isn't these days) and couldn't really spend the time to be an officer or some other position like Grand Poobah or BMF. Maybe you folks could give us new folks who would consider serving in some other low key position an idea how a person would be able to do it.
Maybe I could just start by writing some good articles for the mainsheet on my renovation work on my 25. I guesse I'll have to learn how to use my new digital camera too.

Mainsheet General Editor John Gisondi (John G-) 21 Cornelia St. #1F New York, NY 10014 jg949@hotmail.com br /
The Mainsheet comes out four times a year and the deadlines are six weeks before publication, Nov., Feb, May and August. The August issue will have the regatta in it. I ask that all articles submitted get to me two weeks before the deadline (eight weeks total) so that I have enough time to edit and compile the entire copy that our Assoc. is responsible for. I have a limited amount of space to update the Assoc. activities and the “Fleet News” which offers the local fleets a place to let us know what they are up to. Since I took on the duties as C25/C250 Natl. Assoc. editor we have gotten a feature article in the front of the Mainsheet in each issue. In the May issue Arlyn has a feature on trailering his C250 to the Great Lakes from Texas and the second part of Steve Milby’s racing article. Usually I have to nag, cajole and beg for stories. If you have a great story that the entire Catalina fleet will appreciate by all means submit it to me. I ask that it be about 1500 words (or I will have to cut it to 1500 words) and it relates to our boats, the C25 and C250. For the Nov. issue I want to recap in more detail the regatta and the trips people took to get there and the fun they had while there. Also I am looking to do a compilation article on the summer cruises our members took. I already have the Bimini trip that Ben took and want to hear of other great cruises you may have taken, especially if more than one C25 & C250 was on the trip. As Bryan has posted and is listed on the Officers & Staff page I can be contacted at; jg949@hotmail.com Thank You John Gisondi Mainsheet Contributing Editor C25/C250 National association
BTW – I’m not sure but I think Arlyn has taken the on Tech Tips for the Mainsheet at least for the C250’s We need some one to take on the tech articles for the C25. IMO we do not need to reprint forum posts just to fill the pages up. Our forum is great but the Mainsheet should stand on it’s own.
Underlined words are a HOT link. Click on the “Peregrine” icon.
what does "taking on the tech articles" for the C25's involve?
What liabilities are incurred if someone follows a tech article, and is subsequently injured (those of us with assets/income , or are employed in the medical industry are constantly looking over our shoulder)

Each issue needs Tech Tips from each Association. Arlyn has submitted the latest tips for the Aug. issue. Arlyn and I have discussed having two editors for our pages one for the C250 and one for the C25 that way each would be responsible only twice a year for tech articles. I suggest anyone who wants to split the duties with Arlyn talk directly with him. The magazine has a password protected system of up loading text and photo’s or drawings, in JPEG format, that is not too difficult to follow. I’m not sure how many words the tech articles are allowed but I’m sure there is a limit on length. There is a long lead time between the submission deadlines and publication (see my post above). As I said before IMO it would not help anyone to just cut out forum posts and reprint them in the mag. What’s the point? I could see developing a thread and editing a tip into a definitive way to fix a problem. We should remember that $10 out of the $20 membership dues goes to the mag. So we need to make the articles in the mag. as good as possible. As for liability that is a lawyer question or you could consult with the publisher. Frank, your bio lists you as a C22 owner have you bought a C25? Do you feel you know enough about the C25 to take on the Tech Tips for the membership? If so then contact Arlyn.
I was asked to share this e-mail on the forum that I sent to some of the other Association officers.
The intent of this post is not to offend anyone or ask someone to step forward to do something they cannot do for one reason or another. It is just a list of people that I feel would make this Association as good as it can be.
How do we go about nominating people for the open positions?
I think maybe we should talk to Steve Milby, Don Peet, Don Lucier, Buzz Maring, Dave Bristle, Val Bisagni, John Mason, Derek Crawford, Arlyn Stewart, Oscar van Loveren and Steve Madsen.
These people have been around awhile and do a lot of posting on the forum. I think they would be respected and would do a good job. Of course I don't know most of these people I am making an opinion based on their participation on the forum.
We will hold an election in the next few months for the "Elected" positions. These are:

Commodore

Vice Commodore

Secretary

Treasurer

Chief Measurer

The other responsibilities are appointed as the "victims" offer to help. Obviously it takes a great deal of dedication and effort to make this organization run smoothly.
Currently I am serving as the treasurer and I am more than happy to continue to serve in that role or any other.
Duane Wolff is serving as the Chief Measurer and has stated his willingness to continue.
Arlyn Stewart, Don Peet and J.B. Manley have offered to serve. Anyone mentioned by Bryan (or anyone else) only has to say that they would serve and in which role to be nominated. Once we have a list of names and no one else steps forward we can send out ballots.
I would like to see an active racer as the Commodore but that is my opinion entirely and open to debate. The only requirement is to be an owner of a 25 or 250 and be a member in good standing, i.e. your dues are paid!
Frank... that is a good question about liability and while I feel the risk is minimal a disclaimer on the website and the Mainsheet is a good idea. We can certainly address that issue with Jim Holder who is the editor. I would also suggst that you talk to Arlyn about what he is doing for the 250's to get a feel for what is involved.

“I would like to see an active racer as the Commodore but that is my opinion entirely and open to debate. “
While I greatly respect racing... did it with my son for several years on a Hobie 18, and had a blast, I disagree with the notion of excluding any interest area affiliation from serving the role of any one of the officers.
Racing is just one of the several pursuits to be enjoyed on a C25 or C250. To characterize any one of those interest over the others is a step towards breaking community, we’ve been there before and it was painful overcoming.
That wasn't my intent, quite to opposite, as I feel we aren't geared as much to the racers. My thought was only to ensure a better representation of all interests... I certainly did not mean to imply that only racers should be considered...
Cliff, I understand. Here are a few more thoughts for the group.
The Vice Commodore (according to our by laws) is the officer with the racing clout… He/she is the person who handles the request for Nationals bids, discusses those with the other officers who make a common consent decision and then the Vice Commodore appoints a Race Chairperson (probably the person who submitted the proposal). Having said this, they need not be a racer, but should accept their responsibility to find a host group for the Nationals.
The problem which occurred previously, was that the Vice Commodore was expected to be the Race Chairperson… Then as a reward for his/her efforts, they automatically served the next year as Commodore. The annual meeting, which occurred at the Nationals, was the only place for someone to be nominated and those in attendance were the only ones to vote. Hence, racing had control. So, I reacted partially do to the struggle that ensued for others to be represented and able to place their vote.
In a multi interest community as we are, it really lies within the special interest groups to put it together. This is partially true because of liabilities. The association, has no umbrella. The point that Frank made is one that past officers have labored over… and hence why we saw it much more beneficial to have our National Regattas hosted by an “in conjunction event” if possible. Not that this was cause to be scared to have them, but if two Nationals options were available, and one had a hosting with an umbrella… heck, it made sense.
I organized a winter cruise to Pensacola, but did not advertise it as an association event… rather it was every boat, skipper and crew for themselves. Gary Norgan has just returned from a cruise with a small group in the San Juans… which is likely how it will have to work, loosely organized without sponsorship by the association. Jim has said that he and others are about to participate in the West Catalina Rendezvous, betting it has an umbrella.
I have enjoyed building my web site and sharing mods for the c250… but on the bottom of the mods page is a disclaimer… “These are my personal mods, use of any ideas is done at ones own risk.”
Three years ago, a Nationals hosting in New York fell thru primarily because of liability concern. Should the Association charge enough for dues to cover the cost of a policy? Would officers feel protected? Who knows? Then it starts getting tough. If a National Regatta once a year for a handful of boats was the only reason for the policy, would that be very cost effective? In turn, cruising events would be entitled to the same.
Btw, What happened to sand lot baseball? It has been many years since I’ve seen a neighborhood game in play.
Good issues Arlyn. I think we can take our cue from our past Commodore, Ed Jakubas. He was not a hardcore racer but he worked hard to make sure the people who wanted a regatta got one. I know he was disappointed when the one the year before didn’t get enough boats to take place. He also worked at building the membership and helping me sort out the local fleets. About the regatta, I think ten boats showed up with about 60 members and from all accounts they had a great time but we have about 500 plus members. The officers need to serve the entire membership and we need to get as many members to vote as possible. This Association went through a very nasty time when only the few racers could vote for officers. IMO the local fleets, the web site and the forum are the core of our “National Association”. I see the regatta as a bonus for the few who can participate. We all pay the same dues and need to feel the Association is for all members. We need well rounded sailors who are committed to building the membership and keeping the above mentioned assets strong as our leaders.
I have volunteered with a variety of org's and positions. I've come to realize that I contribute more by working in-the-background doing a variety of smaller, non-repetitive tasks as opposed to getting bogged down with "boilerplate" routines . . . I just hope my wife doesn't see this post! Can people serve anonymously ?
Yes, I do own a C25, an 89 model wing keel tall rig. I am currently doing many upgrades on it. I didn't realize that I was listed as a C22 owner, which I still am, until she sells. I completely upgraded my 22, and the broker said it was on of the nicest 22 he has ever seen. I'm renovating my 25 as further training/learning until I can afford a 36
I'll tell you what. I'll learn how to use my new digital camera someday, and then learn how to post pics, and then you all can decide if I should write articles for the tech section.
I would be will ing to take on some "intermittent" duties for the association though. I'm sure most folks start out that way.
"Gary Norgan has just returned from a cruise with a small group in the San Juans… " Hey, Aryln, I was reading your posting and ran across the above statement....I am 53 and do forget things occasionally but I don't remember doing this no matter how hard I try to bring back the memory Someday I will go there, you can count on that! (if I remember). No hard feelings at all though, just caught me by surprise! Just interested in how my name got dredged up.
Gary, Sorry for the confusion, evidently and I don't recall why, I mistook you for someone else that recently reported returning from a San Juan's cruise with a couple of other C25s...
After flaming on about racing rules on the c 250 forum. I would be happy to work with someone else relating to rules or race organization, but I have no desire or time to be "in charge." Just willing to help.
