Ok I know it is early, but I am beginning to plan my fall projects. First on the list is to paint my mast, boom & whisker pole.

Has anyone done this? I recall but can't locate earlier threads. Is epoxy the way to go and does one use that "roll & tip" method?

What is the lifespan of the particular product, and does it hold up well against scratches? (aluminum under white can get ugly looking)

Thanks

Frank,
Aren't you the one with chafe marks from the halyards, specifically, where they go from rope to wire? If so, and you're determined to paint the mast you might consider converting to all rope halyards.

Me, I wouldn't paint these items. To make it look like it came painted from the factory you're looking at a lot of time. Same warning as painting the top sides . . . you'll always be chasing scratches. I'd go over them with NevrDull; the untrained eye will never notice it.

Congrats, I think you're the first one to mention the "F" word this sailing season .

BOO! HISS!

I've got at least a couple months of happy sailing and only minimal boat work left. I shall not darken my spirit with thoughts of Fall and Winter projects!

Sorry Guys

With all the rain here in the Northeast, I've lost my focus. We still have August & September dont we

And by the way I did convert my wire halyards to external rope last year.

But I still have the chaffe marks on the mast, and i do get a little anul when it comes to the boat. So somehow they have to go!

Frank,
If you do decide to paint your mast, etc., you'd probably want to start with aluma-prep, then epoxy primer and then an epoxy finish. I'd vote for not painting it but if you do the aluma prep chemically cleans the metal and you will get a good bond.

I've painted aluminum before. Please listen to the voice of experience. Do not do it. Looks great for a while then looks like *%#&.
