Missus and I enjoyed a showing of Pirates of the Caribbean, and for those sailors who also enjoy a movie now and then this one is a Sailors Delight. Perhaps that's a little strong as the movie has little to do with sailing and much to do with pirates, The Royal Navy and Rum but Johnny Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow is a character not to be missed. Big Roger Ebert says it best... The movie made me grin at times, savor the daffy plot, and enjoy the way Depp and Rush fearlessly provide performances that seem nourished by deep wells of nuttiness. Depp in particular seems to be channeling a drunken drag queen, with his eyeliner and the way he minces ashore and slurs his dialogue ever so insouciantly. Don't mistake me: This is not a criticism, but admiration for his work. It can be said that his performance is original in its every atom. There has never been a pirate, or for that matter a human being, like this in any other movie. There's some talk about how he got too much sun while he was stranded on that island, but his behavior shows a lifetime of rehearsal. He is a peacock in full display.
The movie's a little long, but hey, so's a great sail.
Looking back in time how about recommendations for other good Pirate or Sailing movies.

My favorite sailing flick is the tapes I made of the Americas Cup at Fremantle--particularly the last race where DC blew out a sail on the final leg. That was some sailing! If the Kiwi's boat from this year had been there, it would've broken in half and sunk on the first beat!

I liked the Brando version of "Mutiny on the Bounty." Brando is all wrong as Flethcer Christian, but hey, he's still Brando. And the sailing/South Pacific scenes are showstoppers.

See "Captains Courageous", with Spencer Tracy & Freddie Bartholomew. Its setting is the Glouster cod fleet on the Grand Banks, and it has some fantastic sailing sequences of the fleet of schooners. BTW, I believe Sterling Hayden, the actor, was in his youth a Glouster doryman and a topmast hand in the series of races between Bluenose and the Gertrude L. Thebaud.
How about John Candy's Summer Rental...Take your family on vacation, break your leg catch the sailing bug...Send your wife off with a wealthy single father to go powerboating and sneak off too learn how to sail with an Old Salt....and in the end give the arch enemy a regatta of a life time.

quote:
Errol Flyn In I think it was called Wake of the Red Witch.

Douglas, your brain is fried. John Wayne was in Wake of the Red Witch (with Edward G. Robinson). But Captain Blood and, even better, the Sea Hawk, are great fun (and listen to Eric Korngold's music in Sea Hawk!).
Pirates is a silly, fun movie. Two people sail a brig? I don't think so. But Johnny Depp is the most fearless actor in film, and Keira Knightley is . . . breathtaking.

I guess we can thank Alinghi for ending the series early...I suspect that if it had continued, what you describe would have come to pass!! I really wish I had some of the '92 races on tape--or even better yet, the LV finals of '00....Cayard vs. Bertarelli!!
Paul _ I took the two visiting grandkids to see "Pirates of the Caribbean" today - we all enjoyed it immensely! Thanks for the recommend! Derek

I just read this to my wife, she started laughing and said that's exactly what she thought too. I haven't seen the movie yet, hoping to go soon. Where is the priate smilie face when you need it the most.
The admrial and I were doing the priate bit last night in our weekly beer can race. We went over early re started and I think we might correct out first, couple other boats false started too but didn't go back.
Matt - I have a theory that if you are not over early just once a year then your starting technique is not agressive enough! (I've had mine for 2003!! - but we picked the right occasion to do it as we had already won the Series! )) Derek

Paul, Derek et. al. Not meaning to change the subject from pirates but, how does your race committee start the race. Ours uses this stupid 4 min. horn then the start on the 5 minute mark. We run three races Boom Boom Boom. Going to other lakes, I have not had them start with this 1 min. warning. Should I say I don't like it. I have troubles seeing my watch and 4 min looks close enough to 5 for me. I wish they would just go to the 5 min warning and then a horn every 5 min for the different starts. OK enough gripping.
Not having seen P of C yet I have liked anything with Errol Flynn, also Treasure Planet is pretty cool.
Most anticipated sailing movie: "Master and Commander" -- http://us.imdb.com/Title?0311113. If this is a good one, there'll be a lot more made from the Patrick O'Brian books.
