Does anyone know where I can find the dealers invoicec/cost on a 2002 mkII? I am thinking about trading my 2002 C250 in - they are offering me 22,500 for mine - what do you think? I would be ending up paying $37,400 for the NEW 2002 MkII. Thanks.

I guess it depends on the extra equipment you have on the boat.
The Trailer Sailor classifieds has a couple 2000 c250wk for sale for around $30,000.00. If I can remember I believe they were pretty loaded i.e. wheel steering, marine head, electronics and some other stuff. Of course on anything, car, truck or boat that you trade to a dealer they are going to give you trade in value so they can make money when they sell it.
I personally feel $22,500.00 is low for trade in on a 2002 especially when you think they are going to send a little money to clean your trade in and do some paper work then turn around and sell it for a least $30,000.00. That means they are going to make $7,500.00 on your trade in.
I would sell it out right yourself if you have the time. Then you can get all the money. If not I personally would not settle for any thing under $26,000.00. Another idea, the Catalina dealership here in Colorado will sell a boat on consignment for 10% of the selling price.
Keep in mind that if selling as an individual for 26,000. Then the sales tax credit on the new boat for the 22,500 will be lost which is just under 2,000 so that brings the gain down to 1,500.
This is a long standing gripe with me that dealers have this advantage. In my opinion, an individual ought to be able to sell their boat or car for which they have paid sales tax... and within a reasonable period of time buy a replacement and get credit just as in trading it with a dealer.
What is the sales tax credit? I don't understand this.
Byran- I am attracted to the boat b/c 1. I think the price is great and I like the added room - able to sail comfortably with my family - 9 mos and wife and dog. I also like the wide beam- which adds to my the cabin space. I don't spend much time below deck, but I am finding that it is uncomfortable for my wife and dog below deck under a strong sailing wind (heeling. I think this boat would heel somewhat less - although this is all subjuctive to the man at the helm. Primarily - I am finding that I am going to the boat alone most times b/c there just isn't quite enough space below for the wife a baby to "hang out" comfortably below. I really like the added comfort of having the inboard diesel and shower, a real ice box, added vents and the wider deck - allowing for the traditional walk around around area to get to the bow of the boat. Also I really like the anchor roller - it really is a pain to lift the anchor above deck and perfectly adjust it to fit in the storage area.
There are a lot of sailboats in my marina, but to me, the best looking boat out of the bunch(with the exception of my C25, of course! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>) is the lone Catalina 28. She's one nice looking boat.
When a boat or car is traded in to a dealer... that trade in allowance is deducted from the cost of the new boat or car... sales tax is paid on the balance.
If a car or boat is sold by owner, then sales tax is paid on the full purchase price of the replacement.
In your case, they are asking 59,900 for the C28 and allowing you 22,500 for your boat. You will pay sales tax on 37,400 rather than 59,900. 8.5% of 22,500 is $1,912. This means that you will lose unless you privately sell for 24,412 or more. So, if you sold for 26,000 you would gain 1,582 minus your sales efforts.
Bryan's point is well made, keep that 1,500 in your pocket. C250s are selling fairly well.
You can go on the net and find Kelly Blue data for boats that will give you average trade, low and high range prices. Also you might try your Credit Union, assume a member, and they will let you use their's which will have all the options with the adjusments to the basic prices. If you don't have one let me know and we will see what I can do.

Arlyn - thanks for explaining the tax credit issue, I will keep this in mind for future negotiating.
I was unalble to find the Kelly BB value for boats. If you have access to a book and the time, I would be greatly interested in seeing what is gives for a high and low value. Here are the specifics for the 2002 28 MkII Wing Keel,Canvas package,Cockpit cushions, Bimini,150% Genoa and Tall rig, ST60 full electronics including wind package, VHF radio Ray 45, CD stereo.
PS - anyone interested in a 2002 C250WK - very lightly used and in excellent condition?
In addition, I purchased the C250 from this same dealer, therefore I think they should add something in my favor for 1. Return customer loyalty 2. I have had the boat less than 6 mos.
