I am planning on adding cushions for the cockpit seats. Has anyone purchased cushions from Catalina?..How much etc. What other solutions are there and their cost? , thanks, Steve
We bought ours from our local Catalina dealer 1 year after we had the boat. The package includes 2 stern rail seat cushions, 1 gas locker cushion and 2 bench cushions. Easy to install, 4 snaps on the bottom of the stern rail seats and the gas locker and 2 on each side for the bench cushions. The dealer supplied the male snaps with the screw as part of the price.
We paid $250.00 in May of 2001. The admiral thinks it is the best mod we have done.
Steve; After pricing cushions, and finding that the c250 has a larger cockpit than most boats up to 30 feet, that we would take the cheap way out. We got four Sopac cushions from West ; item #370676 at a cost of $33.99 each. I cut the two rear cushions to the shape of the seat (had to remove one corner) the size of the cushions match the layout of the cockpit pretty well, even matching the location of the hatch doors. We acturally had 5 cushions, one for the bridge deck, but left them in the cockpit over night and a strong wind blew one of them out to sea. One advantage of these cushions is that they are closed cell foam, will not absorb water, are only about 1 1/4" thick so that they store well in the cabin when not in use. Bill c250wb Serendipity
I own a 2002 250WK Catalina and ordered new cockpit cushions along with the boat (paid $258.00 plus tax for them) and got them in June 02 when I took possession of my new 250wk.
I just don't use them much when I go sailing and can let you have the pair for $75. (plus you pay for shipping).
I'm guessing that because they are so long that shipping won't be "cheap."
I'm in Chico, California.
One of the snaps fell off of it (I don't use the snaps anyway but I thought I'd better tell you).
They have never been left outside at night, only used when I go day sailing and have never been used for flotation.
I just received the cushions, I will post an update after this weekend when we get to use them after the Fiesta Regatta on Canyon Lake..I am very excited...especially for the Admiral and my Crew!, Steve
Hey Steve! You putting MORE weight in your cockpit...darn, I may have to take another 5 secs of my PHRF... Derek
Sold the virtually new Catalina cushions to Steve and shipped them. I think he's thrilled.
They were just too bulky for my tastes and the three smaller cushions we never used and were just in the way.
Guess everyone is different.
So then I bought a couple of the Sopac cushions from West Marina.
The good news is that they are a lot lighter weight than the original Catalina cushions.
They also can be used as floaties and they take up a less room.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that the original cushions are FAR more comfortable and the lightweigh cushions from West Marina are not that comfortable (maybe the original ones spoiled my butt) .
I was sailing last weekend on a Catalina 38 in the San Francisco Bay and saw/discovered a top quality, really nice, adjustable cushion.
You can even use it elsewhere (can be used flat or has an adjustable back).
It felt great.
I went on-line and bought one to see how it will work out.....and I'll let all of you know once I've used it a few times.
I understand that West Marina sells one that looks similar and costs less ("a copy cat") but that the quality isn't as good as SportASeat.
I love it and I highly recommend it and I'm buying another one on-line today.
I've now had a few fellow sailors try it and everyone seems to like it.
I don't know if the lower priced ones "copy cats" (at WestMarine) are of the same quality as I've only seen those in a catalog but I have had one person tell me that they aren't as good.
Now Leon's Dream will have the 2 Sopac cushions (from WestMarine) AND 2 (totally adjustable) Sport a Seat cushions.
I was looking at these in West Marine the other day and I'm considering getting a pair for North Star. The lady in the Sport-A-Seat picture is demonstrating my absolute favorite sailing position(my wife's too!), including flopping one leg up on the coaming. I sit like this for hours and hours and to do so while comfortably reclined sounds appealing.
Thanks for the endorsement, I think I'm on my way to buy them now!
I just bought two Sport-a-Seats from West Marine and they are quite comfortable and work quite well. Additionally, I got the second one at half price($45.00 off). The sale actually starts Tuesday, but they gave me the sale price today.
I promised Vic I would post a couple of pics of the cusions I bought from him...well I finaly took them so here they are...and by the way Vic, we really love them..We have spending 3 day weekends on the boat all summer and they make is so much more comfortable. We use the helmsman cushion for the area in front of the companionway or as a back rest. I installed a seat with a contured backrest behind the wheel to support my poor back. Steve
Just a bit more on comfort in the cockpit... I love my cushions! But the one for the fuel locker is pretty much a waste...the tiller sits too far down on it on my boat. On another note...my girlfriend came up with a great innovation while ghosting downwind sitting in the sternrail seats. She cut one of our "noodles" ( long cylindrical floating devices) into sections, slit the sections on one side longitudinally and popped them over the backrest rails. ahhhh....
Willy; I used a similar idea this year on my stern rail seats. I took foam pipe insulation-already split- and cut it to fit around the rails. Then I put electric cable strips, or zip strips to hold it all in place. Makes a big difference in comfort.
