Is anyone aware of a technique to remove a bulkead mounted gauge? Specifically it is a Datamarine Depth gauge that must be removed to replace the cylindrical housing. It has a diameter of about 3" W/ an aluminum flange on the exterior cockpit side.
I have access from the cabin area to the housing, and i assume that it is held in place with silicon. I dont think I could inject a chemical between the housing and bulkhead to soften the silicon.
After removing any screws that are securing the gauge to the bulkhead, try using a piece of fishing line or kite string to cut the sealant between the bulkhead and the gauge.
Just removed mine a few weeks ago and found the same problem. They were bedded with something, but it sure wasn't silicon. It took a lot of pushing and few gentle hits with a rubber mallet to pop them out.
This is a time when you hope the previous owner didn't use 5200 to mount the gauge. I replaced the compass this season and found it mounted with a bunch of "silly-cone" adhesive, held in place with four ss screws. It all came apart rather easily. Pressure from behind and gentle prying in front worked for me.
