From June 30th to July 8th part of Fleet 94 from Portland, Oregon were in the San Juan Islands. 4 boats including 3 c25's and 1 c22 made the trip. Gary Bruner, Encore Captain and tour guide lead our journey. Weather was beautiful with clouds only on the first and last days. Winds were light on most days but we still found enough wind for a couple of great sails out into Haro Strait. Beautiful scenery, good wind, great friends, what more could you ask for?
It looks like you had a great trip. I hope to do a composite article on all the trips our members took this summer for the Nov. issue of the Mainsheet. Please write up a log or an article on your trip and send it to me. I’m sure we will get the article and some of your great pictures into the mag. Okay, that does it! I need to get organized for next summer so I can haul our C25 all the way up there and sail the San Juans.... We're in SoCal and that is a long way to go. Maybe some other California boats could also head up there at the same time; maybe the same time your group goes IF you go again? Would be lots of fun with lots of boats doing a week or two up there, right? (I suppose I need to "inform" my dear wife of this trip ) BTW, great pictures of your trip...and I found out how my name got in Arlyn's post. He used my name instead of Gary Bruner's (in "Your association needs your help" -- "Gary Norgan has just returned from a cruise with a small group in the San Juans… ")
Looks look you folks had a great time!!Glad to see that taking the engine off the dingy did work for Breezy.
If you folks took a look in the library you will see a number of folks from the Catalina Fleet have taken an interest in donating books as well as money in an effort to keep the library up to date!
John: At least 2, maybe 3, of our fleet will be cruising up there on a 2 week stint the last week of July and the first week in August. Terry Annis and Kathy on Lematike and Nate and Margaret Hanson on Lecothea *sp?. They may be joined by another fleet 94 skipper, but he is not real sure yet. Maybe these great pictures of Ray's will convince him.
I need a scanner to post the Orca pics I took the week before the Fleet flotilla went out, but I don't have one!
What a great group we had on this cruise! More information will be sent.
Sorry about that! Just got ahead of myself!! I was referring to the Stuart Island School, the one room school house on Stuart Island.
On the 28th of June, the school had its 100 year anniversary and invited anyone that had an interest in the school all these years. The oldest person that came was 86 years old, and did she have some stories to tell!!
A number of past teachers slso attended, as well as some very old students (young ones also)
The Stuart Island band played for about two hours, after a great pot-luck (the sheep were killed that morning)and a play about the history of the school performed by the kids.
I have been working with the school for about 4 years, and has been a very interesting experience getting to know all the families!!
Sometime this month the folks are planning a social event with a lunch and ball game. So, if you do visit Reid or Prevost Harbor, you might be in for a surprize!
Just wanted to add another link to more photos of our San Juan adventure. It was a wonderful trip, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen this beautiful portion of our country. I especially want to thank Gary Bruner for leading our expedition, and thanks also to Ken Cave for his advice, and tour of his beautiful Cape Dory, moored at Anacortes, WA.
thanks for posting the pics. what a beautiful area to sail. I do like to live vicariously through other people's adventures. Now that I have a digitl camera I'll take some shots of my Keys trip next february.
Great pictures! Makes me a little sick with envy, though. I was planning a cruise up there myself, but not enough boats from our club wanted go to make it worthwhile. Next year for sure! I have done two previous cruises to the San Juan and Gulf Islands, last year and in '99, and had a fantastic time on both trips.

Ben: It varies quite a bit out here. We had a few days when the sweatshirts/polar fleece and foulies came out, but most of the time it was tee shirts and shorts. I think temps varied from the mid 60s a few days to mid-eighties. We had the boom tent up for shade as many times as for drizzle. One hard rain in the 3 weeks I was out there. Encore! left on June 16, met the fleet on June 30 and came home on the 9th of July.....
