The block of the mainsheet assembly was attached to the end of the boom with a metal strip (they call it a "tang"?). This strip broke. I would guess that over time the load - always coming from different angles and sometimes even from the side when the boom is all the way out - would cause metal fatigue and the tang will fail. As a temporary solution I attached a toggle to the eye on top of the boom (where the topping lift usually attaches). Does anyone know of a better solution? The toogle pin will eventually fail exactly for the same reason (shear-load).

Joerg, when the bolt holding my tang to the boom end came loose and disappeared inside the boom, I put a stainless steel bail on the boom, and attached the upper block to that with a shackle. The bail allows the block to slide with the position of the boom. I think it's a vast improvement over the tang.

Brooke, thank you for the advise. However, excuse my ignorance, what exactly is a "bail"?

It is a piece of spar hardware, mostly used to secure the ends of a vang to the boom and mast.

Don, Brooke, this is great. I'll do that. No use having the boom take off just when it blows hardest.

Joerg - the tang on "TSU" broke at the boom in the last race on the first day of a 2-day Regatta. My foredeck guy took it home, ground the broken end smooth and drilled another hole. We've used it ever since!

New tangs are available through a Catalina dealer. I just bought a spare, just in case....
