I have just bought a Raymarine ST40 bidata system. It has two through hull fittings, one for speed, one for depth. Do any other owners know the best place to site these? Currently the boat has a Standard Instruments shoot through hull transducer close to the salt water intake for the head/sink. Would that be the best location?
I have a 85 FKSR, the previous owner put the knot meter transducer through the hull under the forward port sette. This places it next to the keel on the port side. The result is that it reads fast on one tack and about right on the other (close hauled and about 1 nt fast at 5 nts). So don't put it there.
I like the location "LUcky Star" suggests. My knotmeter also reads faster on one tack then the other (when it is reading--paddle wheel knotmeters only seem to work for about two weeks after launch, and on the hard).
If you already have a transducer hole in the hull, and it is in a reasonable location (your depth meter is in the same location as mine), then I would suggest staying with it. If your new depth transducer is of a different diameter than the old one, you face one of the following situations:
1) If the new transducer is smaller than the old one, find a new location, bore a hole the correct size and plug the old hole with fiberglass etc.
2) If the new transducer is larger in dia than the old one, you will need to bore out the old hole (once you have removed the old transducer). Use a hole saw the size of the old hole to make a wooden bung (3/4" pine works fine) the size of the hole, attach it to a piece of plywood or pine and chock it in the hole from inside the hull. You can then center the drill for the new hole and use a keyhole saw bit of the right size to create a clean hole for the new transducer. The whole procedure takes about fifteen minutes.
Many thanks for the help. I guess the V berth locker will be the best place. I think I have a long way to go before my interior looks like Lucky Star's! Great job.
It's taken me 5 years to get there and still much to go, but for now, I'm sailing the hell out of her! No more major work until next haul out.
My Advice to you: do the jobs you need to do so you can get out sailing, the rest can be done in between sails. The most important thing is that you sail her, if not you might as well have bought a fixer upper house boat, eh?
My boat was in pretty poor shape when I got her and a friend helped me rewire the mast and rig her properly. We went sailing about 5 days after I had her hauled to my lake. but nothing else on the boat worked. When the elec panel went caput, I replaced and rewired. when the motor went caput, i bought a new one, when the instruments died, i installed new (well, used from ebay!) ones (this I just did), etc. Inbetween the things i had to do, i replaced and added things i wanted like autopilot and new cushions. But I've never stopped sailing her.
Good luck and let me know if I can help with your upgrades, email me if you need.
