I just purchased an '89 WK (#5946)and will be selling my 1980 FK. The '89 came with the newer 'balanced' rudder, but I wondered if there was a kick-up rudder for this model (or is it even necessary?) and whether there were particular important upgrades as for the 1980 (e.g. spreader sockets, chainplate eyebolts, etc.).
Way to go Daniel, congratulations on your purchase of the 89 WK. Was this the boat in North Carolina which was Neglected? I have been doing lots of work on mine, so feel free to ask me any questions. I may even have an intelligent answer.
Just don't ask me about proper Loos gague tension. I'm still trying to figure that one out myself.
When I test sailed my boat it was blowing 20 to 25, no reefing was done, I screwed up a jibe, and didn't knock her down, broke a few sail slugs though.
Daniel, One thing that I did do, when I replaced the cracked rudder was to get the new improved heavy duty Gudgeons from Catalina Direct, and attached them with 5/16" machine bolts. Very sturdy. I did this because I use a Mast up, and didn't want to stress the old gudgeons. When I ordered a new balanced rudder direct from Catalina parts dept, it came with really heavy Pintles, lots stronger than the original. Now if I run into something there will be some serious stressing going on before failure. I like your idea of a kick up rudder though. My 22 had one. Good luck and enjoy your new toy
this boat has a pop-top but I wondered how the top stays up. It was quite heavy to lift (but I suspect the PO rarely did, so maybe didn't get much exercise?) and there is no hardware on the mast to attach it to.
The windows are in good shape but the screws fastening the plexiglas down are very rusted - shouldn't these be stainless (although I realize stainless will develop rust)?
The vinyl under the cushions is quite stained (used to be white!) although they are otherwise in great shape. What works well to clean it?
Take a look in the C25 parts manual (Brochures & Manuals section of the website) - page 19. It shows a sliding fitting that is used to hold the pop-top up.
You need this part! If you cannot find it in the drawers, bins, compartments, etc.; order one from Catalina Yachts @ Woodland Hills CA or from Catalina Direct.
If the screws in the aluminum window frames are rusting, it's time to replace 'em. Even stainless steel will rust in a marine environment after a while.
Depending upon the type of staining - mildew for example - you might try a mixture of diluted bleech.
Bill is right on with the diluted bleach. I was told that the threads are cotton, and that bleach will eat them up. I took my cushions to an auto detailing place which has steam cleaning equipment for car interiors. He used some kind of chemical which removed odors. I had the smell from the blue crap in the porta potti permeating the cushions. Had them cleaned for 120 bucks, and them let them air out in the direct sun for a few days. Much better. For my pop top Lindsey with catalina direct sent me some plastic clips which hold up the swinging bolts which dog down the top. It makes lifting the top while alone so much easier. Even though I'm a 52 year old I still go to the gym to work out, and it sure helps out when working on the boat.
Hi Daniel, Catalina Direct sells a set of pop top gas shocks that assist in raising the top and also hold it up against the mast. The factery pop top clip should always be used anyway. My pop top came crashing down twice when the sliding clip let go and almost hurt me very bad. With this kit that will never happen again. The shocks are sort of a pain to install but once there on you will wonder how you lived without them. The kit includes everything you need including drill bits and marking pen. Well worth the $125.00. Happy sailing, Dan, Kidless
We have 2 eye brackets screwed to the pop top on either side of the mast. A line is left tied to one of these eyes. When the pop top is pulled up we wrap the lin once around the mast and tie it through the other eye. Very low tech but have never failed in ten years includung a few storms.
