I am looking for advice on sail selection for heavy weather sailing. Sailing close hauled with reefed main alone limits speed to about two MPH. In strong win (35-50 MPH), adding the 110 jib definitely over powers the boat. The storm jib offered in the

James - my first question would be "why the heck are you out with sails up in 50mph winds!" That's one of the reasons you have an O/B motor!! I've raced in gusts up to 35 with a 110 and a single reefed main and we were really at our limit. (But we did wi

I agree with you Derek, the best sail for our boat in those conditions would be any size sail, inside its sail bag, in the sail locker while the boat is tied up for the time being. The best crew location for weather like that is in the bar watching the f

I would think that a C-25 in 35-50 mph winds could not in all reality
make any distance to weather at all in the kind of waves that wind of that strength would generate. I have sailed my sr-sk in 25-30 kts. with a single reefed main and a 65 sq. ft/ str

A double reef in the main reduces that sail by 50% so a 35 sq feet storm sail sounds right for a headsail in that wind - that's a 75% reef. My limit is around 35 knots and I've used single reefed main and no jib but progress is slow and the boat handles

I had a second set of reef points added to the main where the third set would normally go, and I also have a 40 sq. ft. storm jib. I've been out in 30+ kts and 6-8 ft seas in E. LI Sound and been quite comfortable, balanced and in control (until the tide

I have an 80% jib I like a lot when out in stuff much over 20-25 knots. I've used it (alone) to run off at 6.5+ knots in 35+ winds against a strong outgoing tide. I don't leave home without it. BTW, I have a double reefed main, though rarely use the 2n
