This is my first summer with my 1987 Catalina, and until today, the depth sounder was working OK. (I believe it is original equipment). It is reading very large numbers (106, for example). We have cleaned the thru-hull on the bottom, but it still does not work properly. Has anyone had this problem and, if so, were you able to solve it?
Welcome, Pat... There's probably a gain control on the display unit (inside the cabin). Try adjusting that to get realistic readings. It essentially adjusts the "volume" of the transducer. Battery condition can effect it.
If that doesn't work, you may have something growing on the transducer. Did you use some transducer antifouling paint on it? Regular bottom paint is death, but no paint is also a problem for a boat moored in salt water. Little bottles of transducer paint are available at most chandleries.
If all else fails, you may need a new transducer. The manufacturer may be able to provide one that fits right into the thru-hull with no additional fuss.
Let us know if you find anything--this is not an unusual problem (as I can attest <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>).

Couple of years ago my Datamarine failed with the same symptom. Spoke to the guys at Datamarine and I sent the head back to them. They tested it and sent me a new transducer. Forget how much it was but certainly less than a boat unit. The new transducer is a pullout like the knot meter.
