So, what does one do if there is no electricity for the home and the office - one goes for a great day of sailing!!!!!!!

Our power only came back today (Friday) at 6 pm - but we were in our Cat25, and only came back in the evening - LET THERE BE LIGHT!!

I hope all of you had good experiances and stories from this event - always look on the bright (no pun intended) side of life.

I narrowly missed being on Wall Street yesterday... Would've had to make my way down from the 27th floor (only 54 flights), with no subway running up to Grand Central, no trains running out of Grand Central to CT, no hotel rooms available, no restaurants,... I also wasn't stranded in an airport, where I often am on Thursday evenings. The brightest side was that I was here at home--a rare occasion. I was lucky--a lot of people have had a little more trouble finding a bright side. NYC perservered, but it sucked! I hear there was substantial looting in Toronto (!) and Ottawa(!!). Good spirit, Cannucks!

Let it be something to remember. In 1965 I was in the middle of teaching a class, and because we thought the blackout was temporary, we all hunkered down and finished the class. By then it was 6:30 PM and that was when we discovered that everyone else was having a great time in the dark.

It may be coincidence, but last night I sailed home (motored actually--no wind) in total darkness. No moon until much later. I would have had much better visibility if it had not been for the large number of shoreside homes with large docklights, outdoor lighting systems and huge display window lights. I became very aware of the problem of LIGHT POLLUTION. An AVERAGE house today burns four to six times as much electricity as it did forty years ago. And makes it very hard to navigate a sailboat near the coastline on a dark night.

I am sure there's no connection between these thoughts and the blackout...
