Matt - I started a new thread on this for you!
2 years ago we changed our starting sequence to the one being used in the big regattas around the world.
At 5 mins to a start, the Class (or fleet) flag is raised with a horn.
At 4 mins to start, the prep flag (code flag Peter)is also raised with one horn.
At 1 minute to start Peter is dropped with one horn.
At zero mins the Class flag is dropped with one horn, and if you are doing rolling starts, the next Class flag for fleet #2 is raised, starting their 5 min sequence.
The advantage of this system is that the RC has the option of NOT doing rolling starts, and delaying the next start (by not raising their class flag) with out using the postponement flag - for instance, in very light winds if the first fleet hasn't cleared the starting line. It also gets races started in half the time that the old 10 min sequence took.
Hope this makes sense.
Derek
