We just bought a '80 C25 standard mast and we can't figure out what one of the wires is for. The wire in question comes off of the same connection on the top of the mast that the backstay wire comes off of. Our mystery wire is 1/8" stainless steel and comes to within about 2 feet of the boom than turns to 3/8" line for 8 feet or so. Any ideas? The former owner is not available to ask.

Thanks,
Scott L.

Perhaps a topping lift? But it would be unusual to see one made of 1/8" wire one going all the way back to the masthead... and married to line like that..

(A topping lift keeps the boom from falling into the cockpit when the mainsail is lowered)

Hmm.. some sort of running backstay?

Sounds like a topping lift to me. Perhaps it goes to a cheek block and ends in a jam or clam cleat.

The topping lift comes off the backstay and there are no cleats at that end of the boom. I would expect a snap on the end of a topping lift also. Thanks

Hi Scott,

Our 1980 has a topping lift which goes to the top of the mast and back down to the cockpit so we can can adjust it easily while underway. In addition there is a wire with a snap attached to the backstay about 2 ft above the boom. We use it to take the strain off the topping lift when anchored or docked.

The short line that comes off the backstay with a snap hook is a pigtail.

The 1/8" wire with a line tail is a topping lift. There should be some way to secure it at the aft end of the boom. Usually a turning block and a small cleat so it's adjustable. The cleat towards the mast end of the boom on the starboard side is for the aft reefing line.

Check this diagram:http://c25c250.best.vwh.net/restricted/4-1-9.gif
It shows the pigtail and reefing lines, but doesn't show a topping lift.

John,

My 80 looks just like the diagram except we also have a topping lift. Great diagram. Are there more (different areas of the boat)where that came from?
