Thinking about a trip from Marina del Rey to Catalina. I believe this time I will charter out of Marina del.
Can anyone give me a guesstimate of travle time (one way)
Also any info on protocol upon arrival would be greatly appreciated.
Who to call - water taxi - neat places to see- etc. Is their a web site?

I thinking about the end of Oct. How is the weather at that time of year, fog, winds

The distance is about 26 NM in a straight line. If you had ideal sailing conditions, or there was no wind and you had to motor over, it would take between 5 and 6 hours. Will you pull in to Avalon or Two Harbors?

I would advise to go Marina Del Rey to Two Harbors first (it's closer). Call the Harbor Patrol on VHF 9 and ask for a mooring. The shore boats are also on 9. But a dinghy or kayak or something is almost necessary (you can rent a kayak there). Tell the harbor master it's your first time and they will help you tie up to the mooring or string line.

The end of Oct. is very late in the season. Cancel if there is a Santa Ana forecast. Expect cold nights. Keep an eye on the weather especially a late season hurricane sending a big south swell.

My web site has lots of pictures of trips to Catalina http://www.indiscipline.org

http://www.catalina.com is the islands web site.

Remember the cardinal rule for this channel - leave early (first light). Expect head winds going over and a downwind run coming back - though you may get lucky and have a beam reach both ways.

Jim:

Who are you chartering from? A C25?

Sailors from MDR often boast that they get a beam reach both ways. Although I've never been that route, a little over 5 hours to Two Harbors from MDR sounds about right.

Sept - Oct. is my favorite season at Catalina -- less crowds, more fish/wildlife, daytime weather still nice/warm, etc. Lobster season starts at midnight on the last Saturday in September.

Nov. 1 is considered beginning of Santa Ana season, so chances are Oct. trip will avoid them.

Here's a link that may be helpfull...

Have a great time!

I belonged to a sailing club before buying my current Catalina 25. I sailed to Catalina (Avalon) from MDR. It took me 8 hours in decent afternoon wind. The problem was that the club's boat had a small baggy main and a smaller baggier (#3) jib. They put real small sails on the boats to keep them underpowered. As a result, you crawl along while other boats with regular size sails fly past you.

It was still fun.

Does anyone know anything about "Seamist-Skippers it looks like they have a fleet with newer boats, kind of like the Catalina 350.
