You may know what I mean . . . I found it around the pop top and fore hatch . . . it's that black sticky stuff . . .I think Home Depot sells it for weather stripping or use when putting a cap on a pickup bed. It's a gooey black mess . . . Any magic solvents?
Depending one the thickness, if it is thick then scrape off as much as possible with a dull putty knife then saturate with kerosene and wipe off. You will need plenty of rags or paper towels. The kerosene will leave a slight oily film put will not harm the surface. You can wipe dry with paper towels.
I use kerosene and 0000 steal wool to clean the deck stainless then wipe down with a rag. The kerosene removes all the bugs and other surface dirt and leaves the thin film that both shines and protects it against rust and salt exposure. I do this every 6 months.
Kerosene is good stuff for removing any petroleum based product.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> Try Mineral Spirits - if that doesn't work use Interlux fiberglass solvent wash 202. Neither will damage your gelcoat.
But the 202 will damage you, so use in a ventilated area (not with the boat in the barn), use big chemical rubber gloves, eye protection and a respirator. Have the captain douse the smoking lamp 'cause that stuff is flamable. Also dispose of rags in a safe location.
