I swear I’m a decent sailor… I did get to do some sailing in Italy off the coast between Rome and Naples and managed to sink 2 boats. IN 2 DAYS!!!
My first experience was in a regatta in a 15 footer in a 20 knot breeze. The regatta officials said no reefs! Hmmm…… anyway, I managed to find the tiller off the rudder and in my hand completely off the rudder head, tacked unexpectedly, our weight wasn’t balance right and splash! The bow completely filled with water as I was climbing onto the centerboard to right her and down she went.

THE NEXT DAY!
I was sailing a 14 foot flying junior again in the same conditions, this time a wave knocked us down, I swam under to un cleat all my lines and by then that bow filled with water and she began to sink, finally after an agonizing 2 hours in the beautiful warm emerald Mediterranean sea, we managed to right the boat but when she came up the mast wasn’t there, she ended up on the bottom of the drink too.

Sailing 5 years and these were my only capsizes. Those small dinghies fly in heavy wind and open waters but I recommend one with a sealed bow and some other type of flotation in them.

By the way, Isabel hurt a bunch of boats around me but Gypsy survived without a scratch!

I used to think that you you hadn't really learned to sail until you'd capsized. <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle> Used to sail a Thistle and was told that they can sail out of capsize. Can't prove it by me. The only thing was that I always did in a race and dnf's don't look good in the regatta scoring!

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Steve. Glad Gypsy survived well and healthy!
