I am looking at purchasing a sailboat. I found an 26' S-2 (1980) in greatshape for $10,000. It has a bimini, 15hp inboard gas OMC saildrive, roller furling.
For around $4000 I could get a Catalina 25 (1982). Is one foot worth the extra $6000. I know you

Just looking at the apples to apples picture...Does the Catalina have a bimini ? Thats at least $400-600 dollars difference. Does the Catalina have roller furling ? Thats $ 400-700 difference. Does the Catalina have a motor at all ? How old i

You didn't give a whole lot of information here, but before everyone tells you get it appraised, look into a few more things.

After sailing the Catalina for 3 years I would jump at the inboard engine, but you have to realize it comes with more maintena

Don't be too afraid of buying OMC--they were bought out by Bombardier of Canada, who is working hard to rebuild the dealer network. See what a local Johnson or Evinrude dealer says about parts.

I would not go near an OMC in-board gas engine. Parts may be scarce, and I know of (2) individuals who got rid of the OMC drive in favor of diesel. As for the 1980 Cat the price seems a little steep, I bought a 1984 in great shape for less

Hey K,

S2's are nice but not all were created equal.

Being the "keel kicker from hell" I can tell you that I've looked at probably 7 or 8 S2's in the recent past.

Here is what I found.

Leaky chain plates and lot's of spider cracking on all but

I don't know about the inboard version, but a friend of mine has an S-2 7.9 that we've raced for 15 years or so. Great race boat; not terrific accomodations for cruising. His also has a raisable "daggerboard" type keel. Very handy if one runs aground; non

The S2 8.0 is a well built boat. S2 has an outstanding reputation for general quality, but there has been a history of blisters. The 8.0 is a world apart from the 7.9. As fast as the 7.9 is, the 8.0 is slow.
