I got an old wisker pole from a buddy of mine recently. The thing looks like it used to be some sort of twist-lock style but the collars are shot so I thought I'd install a couple sets of push button type catches (the type used on adjustable crutches) to lock the pole in postion. I want to have two set because I have both a 150% genoa and a 110% working jib. What I need is the foot length measurement of a standard 110% and 150% foresail. My understanding is that the pole length should be equal to the foot length of the sail. If I'm incorrect please advise. Obviously I have the sails down at the boat but getting the measurments would allow me to make the modifications without a trip to the marina. Thanks in advance!!
With an J of 10'6" you simply multiply the "J" by the head sail size J=100% http://www.catalina25-250.org/tech/c25spec.html I have no idea if your information about the relationship of whisker pole length to foot length is accurate.
I have the one from forspar that extends to 12 feet, for my 110 it works great. It is however too short for my 150. What I have gleaned from this site is that a 17' spar is needed for that, but they are big bucks and will have to waite for me.
According to class rules, "Whisker poles including end fittings may not exceed 16 3 1/4 inches." This the demension of the "longest perpendicular, 'LP' measured on the perpendicular from the outside edge of the luff to the clew."
Remember that the percent rating on jibsails has to do with the LP of the sail - not the foot. So, applying the percentage to the J (stem fitting to mast base) measurement will give you a smaller sail than you think.
Don's figure of 16' 3 1/4" should be the LP for a 155%. The foot is actually going to measure somewhere around 17.5'. The reason for using LP instead of foot for the measurement is because the clew corner of the sail can me desinged close to the genny track (a "deck sweeper") or higher up off the deck (especially for roller furling sails). Depending upon the clew corner height off the deck, the foot and the leach measurements change from sail to sail.
Regardless though, the max length for the whisker pole for the C25 is as Don states - 16' 3 1/4"
Snickerdoodle's whisker pole is adjustable from 9' to 16' and uses push button locks. However, instead of multiple push buttons, the outer tube has multiple holes - about every foot or so. Don't look to buy one of these though. Forespar quit producing this model some time ago.
