I also found that it was difficult to let the tiller go for any length of time without the boat getting a mind of its own.
I use a forespar hiking stick. I installed a "lock box" in the seat back into which you lock the end of the hiking stick.

John - I'd like to try that idea (currently I use a Tillerman - I didn't like the lump of the Tiller Tamer either). What have you found is the optimum length for the bungee cord?

Tiller Extension / Tamer

I installed a new tiller extension.
The unit is brand new and has an unique feature. It can be fixed to the coaming with a quick disconnect
