I haven't been able to locate a map detailing the locations of the fires. Are you folks out of harm's way? Haven't noticed you posting recently, so hope all is well!

I took Gary and his dad (from Hemet) sailing Saturday. It's a good thing I didn't stay on the boat that night for early fishing Sunday. We woke up in our Valley Center ranch house with strong winds and smelling smoke. Eventually all the freeways were closed.
Sunday was a day of fear and uncertainty. Our house was surrounded by flame and smoke - but at a distance of several miles. Many of our close friends were evacuated. Rumors are flying. No one knows for certain where the fire is and where it's going. It is south east of us and with north east winds we should be safe, however, we live in the bottom of a very deep canyon and the winds swirl here in unusual ways (we can have a south wind when everyone else is having a north one). Should be familiar to you mountain lake sailors.
Last night I was called and told not to come to work (San Diego County Sheriff, Data Services Division). The fire burned very close to the County Emergency Ops Center (where I work) and, although they did not evacuate the dispatchers, our adjacent building is uninhabitable today due to smoke. I expect to return to service tomorrow. Our computer systems are up and can be operated remotely, from our homes - which we routinely do during midnight unexpected outages.
My friend who lives in Mission Bay says his house is covered by 1/4 inch of ash so I expect to return to a very dirty boat.
As long as the winds remain calm, and north east, we should remain safe.
Kids are home from school today.
Karen and I have lived here all our lives and this is the worst we've ever seen.
You guys (Y'awl) to our southern friends) are in our prayers, and we will be asking for safety for you and your families, and for your friends, and that your homes be kept from harms way.
Entirely too close for comfort! As Don said, you're all in our thoughts and prayers. This sure has been a year of natural (and unnatural from what they're saying) disasters.
Jim, sailing Saturday was fantastic!! Lots of wind and had a great time. My Dad (at 77) now says he'd like to go out sailing alot with his oldest son. He really enjoyed it. And the AZTECS beat Wyoming Saturday night....25 to 20....just before all hell broke loose down in San Diego from what I see. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?img_id=11806 Above is a link to a photo that is just incredible. Hope you can download it quickly. Mine took awhile with a 56k modem. Look at all the smoke coming off the SD fires Jim, it is Monday evening around 5:30. I sent an email a short time ago to see if you were okay. Maybe I will call to get a quicker reply. Hope all is well. We will do some prayers for you. Hemet is partly covered in smoke but no where near as much as south of us. Sage area is going pretty good and the San Bernardino area was ugly over the weekend. Mushroom clouds looked like atomic bombs going off.... Don't know the status right now of trailering the boat down to San Diego right now. Probably get better by Saturday morning I hope... Will have to be patient. Stay in touch. Gary
BTW, those fires most probably were arson fires. The Lytle Creek one produced an eye-witness of two white guys in a 2000-2001 gray van actually throwing fire into the brush and U-turning and speeding away, leaving the area as fire spread rapidly up the incline. Butt-heads!! The right punishment would be burning at the stake. When I lived in San Diego, the fires back then were always arson started, along main roads so they could get away quickly. Some even were started by reserve fire fighters....some were caught and are doing some extensive time making license plates. Later.
I heasrd this evening on the news that one was started by a lost hiker who started the fire so his buddies could find him. Butt-head is far to kind. Y'awl be careful.
NPR had afternoon special on the fires... and revealed that the small city of Julian was threatened... Some great apple pies come from there... but I don't think they need additional baking fires.
I was thinking that I should relate a little having recently been there in the last couple of years... but really, I doubt if we can appreciate the concern that must exist there.
