I've been planning to rebuild my broken three-piece teak companionway hatch, but I've about decided it is beyond all hope. Has anyone replaced the hatch with a one-piece plexi-glass (or similar material)?
Teak is expensive. You might try making new boards out of Walnut. It can be oiled an left outside to weather like teak. I have used it on another boat (O'Day) . I had it for 10+ years and boards kept looking great. Much cheaper and easier to get than tea
One disadvantage of a single-piece hatchboard is stowing it--you'll have a BIG board. Make sure you have a satisfactory place to stow it before you go that route. Are all 3 boards broken? If only one, you might want to consider making replacement from
The idea is to have three boards. When the waves start to rise and weather gets bad one board goes in. Worse weather = an aditional board. If a crew member is below and want to close off some of the weather its easy to put in or pull out one or two boards
I haven't made a hatch out of plexiglass, but have found an excelent site for materials and TONS of information about cutting shaping and general info on any plastic. Try SDplastics.com

We remade hatchboard out of teak, and what a pain it was. Last I checked Burmese teak was selling at 17+ bucks a board foot. I would recommend calling catalina or Catalina direct to see what they have in that department.
You might consider mahogany. About a year ago, I made a new tiller out of mahogany, and it looks really good finished with teak stain. I got it at a local lumberyard, and it was not terribly expensive. Mahogany is not so hard to work with as teak.
Catalina Direct sell the entire setup for your cabin hatch, sideboards, step plate, and hatch doors , all in the white plastic. This is the identical stuff used on the new catalina's. And it's about 1/4 the price of teak. On my old C22 I made the mist

Last year I rebuilt mine and used some mohagany that I had in my shop. Was very pleased. Should last a long time and looks better than teak when finished. John on Ms Achsa #77
Buzz, A few people used the below link to me and this message board showed up in my stats. If you would like to give me the dimensions of the hatch boards, I would be glad to quote. And if you want to give me your email address I would be glad to send yo
