I launched #727 on October 9th and motored from the launch ramp to the Marina slip. Since then it has been sailed once in light winds and then motored again a few days later as there was no wind. I went to the Marina on October 30th, which is 3 weeks since the boat was launched and found "Spider Cracks" on the deck in three places. Under the anchor chock on the starboard side of the boat (see photo link). On the port side near between the rub rail and the front window (see photo link) and on the starboard side between the rub rail and the front window.
I was quite surprised to say the least. I checked other C250's at the Marina and none of them have any spider cracks on the deck or in the same area as they have appeared on my boat.
Has anyone ever had this happen on their boat? I somehow don't think this is normal. I have some concerns about the cause of this and the fact that it might be caused by some structural issue?
I informed the dealer and he is contacting Catalina to see what they might want to do about this "issue".
All comments and experiences will be appreciated in getting to the bottom of why this might happen on a "new" boat.
Danny, I can see them even better in thes pictures. There is major problems with the gelcoat process on your boat. As Aryln said, it could be a bad batch or poor preparation of the fiber surface.
Clam, Arlyn, Jerry, thanks for the comments...the dealer may be here tomrrow to look at it, I'm not sure yet. I'm working in LA next week and offered to visit with Frank Butler with my photos and discuss it with him while I'm down that way, but I'm not sure if the dealer has made contact with Catalina yet. I hope they have sufficient records of the materials used so that I (we) can find out what really happened to cause the problem. As they continue to grow and appear I will continue to photo document them. I should see if there are any hull numbers that are near #727 and see if they have had the same problems...hopefull they haven't. Thanks again...Jerry, hope things go well tomorrow with the mast and such...Dan #727
As the owner of 5775 regular 25. I can say that my 15 yo boat has nothing like that. And I have run mine into the dock twice in the first month I owned her! If you can work it, a new boat may be the proper fix. Cosmetic problems are only a prob when you TRY to sell! You should have to put up with that when the boat is 25, not 0.2 yo! Good luck.
Those cracks don't look anything like the small "spider" cracks we have near our rubrail where the boat has contacted the dock (2 spots - 1 from the previous owner & 1 from us). I think I would concur that there is a problem w/ the gelcoat & I would definitely take it up w/ Catalina.
