I all. A few C25 folks have expressed how they covet the stern seats on the C250s. I too, think they are great. I've seen someone make a mod for their 22 foot sailboat (don't remember what kind of boat, not a Catalina). It was pretty slick. It hung on two ropes from the top rail, to a seat (wooden board really) about a foot lower than the top rail.
Has anyone else ever seen something like this. The guy who did it was my dock neighbor when I had my Cal 21, which didn't have a stern pulpit. He loved it. He said it allowed up to have more visability, and when he wasn't using it, it was easily stowed. Now I wish I had looked at it closer. I'm going to try to rig something up for next season.
Great forum. There is a product called stern perch on the Sail-2000 web site. It sells for 229/pr. It's custom ordered. They used two gull clamps to attach a rail to the stanchions, one foot below the stern-rail. There is a photo of a cat-25, just click on " boats with out second rail". However, they say it is now only available cat-25 with inboards. Due to accessibility to the outboards. Perhaps this is just there way of a disclaimer or maybe you could buy a single seat opposite the outboard
For a holiday present a few years ago, a friend, who was into making starboard (white construction material) stern rail perch seats, gave me one.
Just one.
He'd sailed with me, and knew I had my BBQ and backstay adjuster on the starboard side. The one seat he made for us that we have on the port side is more than enough to open up the cockpit and get the extra seat and vantage point. The cupholder feature is nice, too. We have an older boat without the protruding stern rails, but it fits just fine and is not in the way otherwise.
I saw a new Beneteau recently where the seats flipped up. Not so sure I like even more moving parts!!!
There're probably a lot of options out there, and starting with one to clear the engine is not a bad idea.
Figuring the trick to mount one with a single stern rail seems to me to be the biggest hurdle. If it could be underslung it'd work, since they all have aluminum legs on the bottom to hold the weight. The short legs rest on the cockpit seat, or could be worked to fit on the end of the coaming.
I called 18008774797 @sail 2000 to see if they would sell just one seat instead of the pair, for those of us that have outboards and John said YES!! I know what Santa is bringing us!! Jason and Fran 1982 Catalina 25 swing to wing
Great idea, I can probably make two of my own for under $50. Make the seat from oak, buy the rail clamps at WM, make the leg from PVC or I have some stainless tubing laying around.
You could still make two, just remove one when motoring.
Jim, it's been awhile since I saw Weird Science, but I don't think that's how they did it. However, if you can make one for $25, then please make one for me.
Not even I will touch the comment about removing one for motoring.
I love the concept of the stern rail seats, but how comfortable are they really?
In order to make things more comfortable in the cockpit, last spring I purchased two of these Sport-a-Seats for my wife and I. They were such a hit with the wife and kids that she directed me to purchase two more so we wouldn't fight over them.
We just returned from the St Pete sailboat show! What a great time.
While at the show we talked to John from sail 2000 and he told me he had been sued by a Catalina 25 owner because the guy claimed he couldn't get to his motor easily enough and scratched his boat. He will sell one for a Catalina 25 but is very careful after his experience. I can't blame him.
Also while at the show we had a demo sail on a Catalina 390. Incredible boat. The 390 had stern rail seats and they are fantastic.
We also purchased 2 of the Sport-a-Seats. They look great and the ownwers of the company making and selling them are wonderful people. Once we get organized (back to work)I will post some pictures of these seats.
If anyone is in the Largo FL (not Key Largo) area you want to consider a tour of the Morgan/Catalina factory. We really enjoyed it and confirmed our reasons for buying a Catalina.
