One of the downsides of my job is that I have to schedule my vacation time for the following year in late October. That really sucks, and it doesn't leave much room for spontaneous vacation. We can only have so many folks off at a time.
So what I did was take the last two weeks off in February and the First week in march. I'm intending to take my 25 down to the Florida Keys again.
I hope some of my friends can join me, but if not, I'll go anyways. There is a sailing school in Marathon which teaches US Sailing courses, I figure I can take 102 and 103 while I'm there.
Anybody gone to this school?
Any suggestions for good bars/restaurants which you can pull your boat up to?
I like the middle and upper keys. Key west is too touristy.
Deep boat ramps is a problem too. I know that the ramps at Bahia Honda and Pennekamp are good, as is the Old Matecumbe marina (now has a new name) at mile marker 80.5 (just down from the Lorelei)
LAnybody can suggest another good ramp/marina where you can store your truck and trailer (which is another problem)
Thanks
Looking forward to a vacation is a great stress reliever.

Frank,

Its been several years since I visited Key Colony in Marathon. Key Colony has rental houses that have ocean access slips right behind each rental unit. The houses can be rented for a few days, weeks, etc. You may want to camp out in one for a few days while you take those classes.

There's a small ramp in Key Colony which you probably can't use, but there used to be a boat lift nearby. Check out the following links. Call a few numbers and ask about launch/lift facilities in the area. Try the chamber of commerce found in the last link.

BTW, there's also a small local airport in Marathon.

Frank,

I think that the best area in the Keys for sailing is Marathon. I sure enjoyed it. The best diving is around Key Largo. I don't know of any other good ramps. Keep us posted on your plans, maybe some others on the board can plan to go at the same time.

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge--which is both a lodge and a campground--where I have stayed for twenty-five years, has a boat ramp, fuel dock and berths. It is just over the bridge as you get to Big Pine (MM33), and the people there are really friendly. Tell them I sent you. The berths will take a swing keel, maybe even a wing, certainly not a fin.
