I broke two nylon sail shackles (the part that attaches the slug to the sail) last time out. Since they are cheap, I decided to go ahead and preemptively replace all the slugs/shackes... and it's a good thing I did.

On disassembly, I found that every nylon shackle was failing at the same point. Cracks were forming in the "barrel" that receives the little stainless screw that clamps the shackle onto the sail.

Since the crack was clamped up agains the inside of the shackle, the failures were pretty hard to see until I took the sail home and started taking the shackles apart.

I think the next good wind could have 'unzipped' the whole mainsail... one failed shackle would put more strain on the next, and a chain reaction faiure would have set in.

When's the last time you looked at yours?

Thanks for the reminder. I try to check every couple of months. I have had the same problem in the past.

Are you replacing them with stainless steel shackles? I have replaced all my shackles with stainless and all my slugs with stainless steel bailed slugs.

My new main came with plastic sewn-in slugs. It could not even replace one on the water without having to unstich the webbing, and then sew a new one in. Very hard to do while racing.

Hopefully the all stainless will prevent failurs in the future.

On my previous main, I did like Patrick and installed nylon/stainless slugs and stainless steel shackles with plastic protectors.

I don't trust those all nylon slugs and I definately wouldn't use plastic shackles. Just this past season my coworker broke 3 shackles on his main.

I am not following ; what is a plastic shackle? I have plastic slugs on my new Ulman main and they too are sewn/whipped on, but where it there a shackle on a main other than the SS clew shackle that connects the outhaul to the clew and the SS halyard shackle that connects the halyard to the main headboard?

If the slugs are sewn on, you don't have all those slug shackles...
my older main has grommeted holes where the slugs are positioned.

The slugs I had were nylon with stainless inserts.. no failures in
the slugs themselves, only the plastic shackles.

It is used in lieu of webbing and/or stainless shackles to attach the sail slugs to the main.
