I ordered my new Ulman 135 roller genoa from Gary Swenson today - he gave me a great price ($596 impossible to say no). So I am done looking for used sails. But one thing I discovered is that all the lofts have used sails for Tall Rigs (even our own swap meet has several tall rigs sails for sale) and NO standard rig sails.

Reason?

Guess:

(1) TR sailors are more serious racers and turn sails over more often....(I don't believe it).

(2) TR sailors have a much harder time selling their sails because there are so many more SR boats.

Neither really makes sense. What do you think?

Jim,

I have a set of original TR sails for sale primarily because they are 15 years old and raced often. Although they are in good cruising shape, I replaced them with a new, updated set(main and 110) from North. The main has an the max roach size for our PHRF rating, is loose footed, has four battens instead of three, and an extra set of reefing points. Generally a much better sail.

And the answer is.....................#1.

Since tall rig sailors are more performance oriented, the reason we sail tall rigs in the first place, we tend to turn over our sail inventory more frequently than standard rig sailors.
