I just started reading the novel last week. But didn't get to finish it before my wife and I went to see it yesterday. After about the first ten minutes she leans close to my ear and whispers, "do you understand what they are saying?" I like Russel Crowe and I loved the movie!
The admiral and I just got home from the theater. At the end of the film she said "Is it over already?" It is a great film. The History Channel also is running a good Documentary about the film on "History vs Hollywood.
If you liked this movie there are 2 Patrick O’Brian books that will keep you occupied until spring. Read them in sequence.
Master and Commander Post-Captain HMS Surprise The Mauritius Command Desolation Island The Fortune of War The Surgeon's Mate The Ionian Mission Treason's Harbour The Far Side of the World The Reverse of the Medal The Letter of Marque The Thirteen Gun Salute The Nutmeg of Consolation The Truelove The Wine-Dark Sea The Commodore The Yellow Admiral The Hundred Days Blue at the Mizzen
My brother and I ran past the Rose coming through the Race under full sail on her way from Newport back to Bridgeport one beatiful summer day; naturaly, no camera. She was a wonderful sight.

. . . and there are more powerboats than sailboats, more PCs than Macs, more people watching stock cars go around in circles (at least that's one place left in America where people are still turning left) than watching baseball, and more Republicans . . . well, you get the idea: quantity does not equal quality. In fact, the two are often inversely proportional.
Doe anybody remember a movie from the early 90s with Mathew Bodine(sp?) about a group of people designing, building and racing a boat in the Americas Cup, I think? I've only seen it once and the specifics are a little foggy. (Old age and tequila)
Speaking of the movie Wind, I am employed as Captain on the Stars & Stripes (1982 vintage, originally named Spirit of America whose sister boat Liberty lost the Cup in 1983). ANYWAY, the boat I work on was used in the movie Wind. (We take passengers out for 2 hour sunset cruises, etc.) I have been hoping to re-enact the love scene where Mathew Modine and Jennifer Grey went down in the starboard hatch. But she hasn't returned any of my phone calls.

Who can forget the famous "wumper" sail with the scowling Indian face? According to the charactor portrayed by Jennifer Grey: "It fills with wind, goes 'wump' and we win the race".
Apparantly no one measured sails in that cup race nor took a penalty for taking out their opponents sails with their booms, but I loved the movie just the same.

While I haven't yet seen it, based on the budget for the film, only a handfull of films get more sound engineering than this one. While sound mixing with lots of water scenes can be a challenge, I'd presume that the difficult-to-understand dialogue was an "artistic decision" by the director (Australian) in order to make the characters more authentic. What's strange is that certain large foreign markets (e.g. Germany) have less tollerance for this style than in America.

Further proof that younger, often less sophisticated viewers usually dominate the film market.
