Jim....I am going to bow out of the cruise in your area next year. I appreciate your generous offers of hospitality.
I am choosing a longer journey. I've been in Cancun the last 10 days and when I returned I was offered a great opportunity. It turns out that the 2 members of my club who circumnavigated Vancouver Island this year are going on another trip up north with their MacGregors and have invited me to tag along with my boat. The plan is to launch in Prince Rupert, BC and visit the Queen Charlotte Islands. Perhaps also, Ketchikan and Prince of Wales. We will be spending 4 weeks on the water. The benefits (besides more time out) of this trip for me include visiting a new place and it is a guys only trip. My 14 year old son will go with and we need to have some time away from Mom & little brother anyway.
Of course, anyone interested in a trip to the wilderness is welcome to join us.
There might be some locals from our club interested in coming your way in August. Do you mind if I put them in touch with you for advice, encouragement or whatever?
Jim. Early August would work!!!! We should be back from an Alaskan cruise (big boat) with my wife's family by then. School starts again around the 19th or 20th I think. Either then or late June, first week of July. Gary
Not at all! I've invited people on our dock as well. I don't care what kind of boat you have. Even Hunters and Macs are welcome. Or how about a Potter?

Just thinking of that pretty red Potter which has moved to our marina. They could trailer to Long Beach and avoid a 100 mile bash to windward (as could any one else).
The cruise will be very informal. Anyone can meet in San Diego Mission Bay, or anywhere along the way. I am thinking of something like:
Trailer boats arrive on a Saturday. They have Saturday and Sunday to launch and get into the Mariners Cove anchorage (or I can try to arrange a guest slip in Quivira Basin). I'll arrange for trailer parking at the marina or at my house (an hour's drive away). I think it would be great fun to raft up in Mariner's Basin for the weekend. We can take our dinghys to Belmont Park - ride the roller coaster, eat, play on the beach, etc.
We'll leave at dawn on Monday, motor sail to Oceanside (about 40 miles). I'll arrange guest slips. There is no anchorage. If the weather is good we can push on for Dana. Mission Bay to Dana is about 10 hours (65 miles total).
On Tuesday we'll leave at dawn and motorsail to Dana Point. Dana is a really fun place with a great anchorage. There is a beach inside the harbor, pizza place, many resturaunts, bars, shops, and 2 tall ships, trails, beach caves, state beach park, etc.
Wednesday or Thursday we can leave at dawn and motorsail to Catalina. It's about 8 hours from Dana Point. All the mandatory upwind work will now be over! Depending on how many people are coming, I may reserve a boat-in beach campsite, like Lava Wall. These sites have a beach and are on the leeward side of the island. There are picnic tables. That's it. Everything else you boat in or out.
After a day or two we'll be ready to sail 3 or 4 miles to the Isthmus, or Two Harbors. We'll get moorings all together on the "string line". Two Harbors has a store, cafe, bar, beach rentals, and is very quaint.
Those who feel like more adventure can leave after a couple of days and sail to Emerald Bay (great fishing and snorkling), get a mooring, and then sail around the West End to Catalina Harbor (the other side of Two Harbors). This spot is a great anchorage and one of the best natural harbors on the entire West Coast.
If the weather is real good, those who feel even more adventerous can make a sail from Cat harbor to Santa Barbara Island. It's 35 miles offshore from Catalina. It would be an overnight stop in settled weather only. Back to Cat Harbor the next day. I've always wanted to go there, I have charts and the cruising guide, and would like a "buddy boat" along just in case. Expect an island 100% unspoiled in it's natural state, great fishing, diving and exploring.
At this point I'd like to play for a couple of days and then sail from Cat harbor to Little Harbor (on the Pacific side of the island), spend the night, and then sail to Avalon. Little Harbor is also a boat in camping spot. Those boats that did not sail around the island to Cat harbor could just meet us all in Avalon. Those sailing on this side will have several excellent chances to catch fish at the Farnsworth bank, Church rock, etc.
The climax will be a day on a mooring at Avalon. Avalon is a "big" city and a tourist stop, but stopping there puts you much closer to Dana Point and points south.
From this point, I plan to push off and sail all the way back to Mission Bay in one shot. I expect it to be about a 20 hour, mostly downwind (or no wind) sail. I've always wanted to do an overnight crossing. Other boats would have several options for returning. If the weather is worrysome, I will go Avalon - Dana Point - Mission Bay.
Because my family may not want to make this long trip (on a small boat), I am thinking of picking up the wife, dogs, and kids in Dana Point, and returning them after a week (before sailing around the West End and maybe going to Santa Barbara Island). Another possibility is to put them on one of the many passenger boats that cross every couple of hours. Probably my youngest daughter, Heidi, will make the entire trip with us.
Maybe Monday August 2 to be the departure date
I know it's a long way off, but that's what winters are for - to plan your summer cruises!
