I recently dropped my centerboard for repairs and found only one bolt holding up the pulley that is just aft of the centerboard. One bolt is bent and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know how these bolts are put in? Are they studs or bolted from inside the water ballast chamber?

Thanks

They are stainless pan head machine screws, about 1/4 inch if my memory doesn't fail me. They screw in from the bottom into threaded anchors or an anchor plate. To access them, the board must be lowered. This can be done of course by putting the boat on a lift or by jacking up the front of the boat enough to pull the center board out. The board weighs about 90lbs and is relatively easy to handle.

When replacing, I locktited the screws. Inspect the sheave for damage. If the board has been pushed up hard, the shackle on the cable can impact the sheave and may crease or burr the sheave which will leave a cutting edge that will cause cable failure.

Thanks Arlyn,

I have two 1/4 inch bolts with nuts on them (not screws) for the centerboard pulley. I have rotated the bent one but it is not coming out so I suspect that it was put in from above. Will probably have to call Catalina on Monday.

The centerboard slop was partially caused by having part of the centerboard cracked off where the 1" pin goes through. The hole in the centerboard is also worn. I will probably put a bronze bushing in. Catalina also sells shims that you place at the very top of the centerboard so when it is in the down position, the shims are at the top of the trunk and stops the side to side motion. That should be a good mod as it will relieve some of the side pressure on the pin and hanger assembly.

Dan, Yes... they are different than mine. A call to Catalina should get you the right advice.

Has your boat been slipped or moored for a length of time?

Arlyn,

I just bought the boat about 6 months ago and I keep in on the trailer. From all indications, the boat has seen primarily fresh water and no indications of being left in the water.

Overall the boat seems to have had little use. I was surprised to see the problems with the centerboard. I am also disappointed in the engineering on the gudgeons, pintles and overall steering.

Do you know who at Catalina would be best to talk to for advice on the pulley?

Thanks
Dan

I'd ask for Kent Nelson if parts can't answer your questions.

While your getting stuff from Catalina, you may want new gudgeons. The originals with your boat were prone to failures. Inspect them for a weld bead around the bearing. If there is none, then they are the old style and will fail. The bearing will break loose from the mount.

As far as steering, I hear ya. But there are fairly painless solutions to those problems which will provide a fantastic helm. For answers relative to the kickup rudder or wheel steering, see my web site to sort out the options.
