Can anybody offer local knowledge on sailing conditions in Olympia, WA? We are thinking of trailering up from Portland and keeping our FK TR C-25 in the South Sound for the summer. We went up to Hood Canal two summers ago. We loved the sailing but foun

Hi Jeff,
I'm based in Olympia. In my boat, from Swantown, it's a one hour motor to get out of Budd Inlet (that's at about 4 knots); sailing, more or less, depending on wind. The Swantown sling is kinda pricey; about $90 one way. Other than Swantown marin

Another thought to consider: If it takes about an hour to get out of Bud inlet, why not just drive another 40-50 minutes and go to Tacoma? We motor less than 15 minutes and put up the sails in Commencement bay. Good overnight runs to Dockton, Gig Harbor,

Do you know when/where the tall ships are coming? Just so happens we're trying to decide where to spend a two week cruise in August and that might tip the scales a bit.

Thanks for the info.

I know there's lots of neat stuff further north, but I'd rather spend my time sailing than driving. Especially if I have to share the road with testosterone poisoned Ft. Lewis GI's. I get the hives just thinking about that stre

Doug,
Dick Bacon at the Tacoma Wooden Boat Society had told me the tall ships are coming to Commencement Bay, but I don't remember the dates. You could contact the Marine Heritage Center on Dock Street in Tacoma, they should be able to give you the date

Eliot Bay. Seattle out bid Tacoma for the event. But I wouldn't put it past a few of them to come down to our area. We will be taking Odyssey our 90'Sparkman&Stephens (Sea Scout) boat up to Seattle to participate.

You really ought to think about bringing up the Scout Ship to Victoria during our Labor Day weekend-there will be lots of tall ships there, as well as a whole bunch of classic wooden boats to view-as well as a blues festival, fringe festival,
