If you wan't the actual time and launch from Bellingham the time from Portland is about 5 hours. Bellingham has tons of trailer space and a great bay. Close to some great crusing grounds and easy freeway access. Several good boat toy stores in the area but then I'm dreaming again.
I'd be psyched to crew for someone in July in Oregon. I go out to Mt. Hood for race training (skiing) every June, so I could combine the two trips. Here's a thought: why not move it back to early July, right after the Rose festival? The roses are still great (Portland's Rose and Japanese gardens are MUST SEEs while you're there, as is Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood (closest thing in America to a cathedral).
I am still waiting to see what the other officers decided tonight. I stayed out of the voting. We have a specific set of dates on the table, which we picked after looking at the local racing schedule. Portland has a very active racing season and we picked dates that would allow us time on the river without a ton of other racers. The real hot shots will be in Puget Sound for Whidbey Island Race week. If we are selected, we will soon publish the dates for our regatta. I am sure some of the local boats will be seeking experienced, crew, Dave. You sure would be most welcome! I am on pins and needles, awaiting the decision.

Oscar, To be more fair, you would have to pick more than 3 locations. As stated earlier the north south milage for the various areas could be greater than the east west directions. To get to northern california it takes about 6 hours and to get to southern California it takes about 6 hours. And California is smaller than texas, just think of the driving time just to get out of that place . I'd like to go to Oregon for the event but the last time we took the drive it was a two day trip, and that was with just one kid and no boat.
It does seem a four year cycle might be best. Left, right, south, and center. It would seem likely that most people could make 2 out of four on that cycle.
