Would anyone know if the rear bulkhead at the foot of the aft berth has any structural value? I removed mine and enjoy the room for storage of very light things.
I'm not sure about the structural value, but man what a job I had taking it off when I installed my power inlet on the port stern side! I too noticed the space but put it all back together. See if anyone has an answer for ya.
I may have some pics sent to me by an owner who simply made some large cutouts in the aft bulkhead so as to use the area for storage.
I would think that would be a better way to go than leaving it out. If one was careful with the cutouts... they could be hinged and latched which would provide a good appearance and keep the stuff stored from making its way back into the berth.
...took mine out two years ago. There has been no consequence that I can see. I'll add, though, it doesn't look "finished". Next season I might add some stained oak trim (from Home Depot) just to make it look better.
Ventilation has paid off in my boat. No aft bulkhead, no forward bulkhead, Nicro day/night solar vent, aft scuppers (with screens to keep bugs out) ... a quick clorox wipedown a couple times a year keeps mildew and musty odors to a minimum.
