This is the question: is it worthwhile to hire a survey for a 2000 C250 WK that has been in freshwater only and looks showroom pure? What do you advise? Reuben.

Ruben: Based on my limited knowledge and experiences I would say that it is worth the money for a survey and try to get the history of the boat since it's initial delivery. Is this boat located at Lake Tahoe? Dan #727

As much as I hate to give other people money, namely when you can do it yourself, getting a boat surveyed is well worth the cost. First you must remember, the surveyor does not have an "emotional interest" in the boat. He is also trained to locate and defects that may be in the glassing, ie.. the fiber glass is pulling away or there may be water between the glass sheets. These are problem which may change you mind. He should be able to give you a list of defects, if any are found, which you can use to barter with to get the cost down or have the owner repair them at his cost. One final note, unless you are purchasing the boat outright, I don't, and I may be wrong here, think a bank will give a loan on a boat unless it has been surveyed.

Thanks, Dan and Steve. This is my first large-boat purchase and it's good to be able to ask the simple questions and get timely & reasoned responses. The survey sounds like money well-spent. Dan, the boat's not in Tahoe though I did see one there on a website (was it called "Tahoe Dream?") This one's in Minnesota.

Absolutely YES! We bought our barely used 1997 C250 in 1999 & had it surveyed. If you have a good surveyor & are present during the survey you'll learn alot about the boat & what he/she looks for. If nothing else its peace of mind. Best $250 I ever spent!

Ruben: I agree with Cathy it would be money well spent...I did buy a new boat and I'm having trouble with the gel coat and wasn't present when the boat was delivered, I trusted the dealer to inspect the boat when it was delivered...in hindsight I would have hired a surveyor to accept delivery...I've sailed on the boat in Tahoe and the dealer where I purchased my new boat is selling the boat in Tahoe, that is the only reason I asked...good luck on your purchase however you decide to go, the forum is a great place for education and support, and making new boating friends....I will be posting the continuation of the "spider crack" saga soon for those who commented at the time and those who are interested in what the Catalina factory is doing in that regard....Dan #727

Dan I am still shockedat the time table with regards to your issue. Shame on your dealer and shame on Catalina. I just don't understand the delays. I had minor problems compared to yours and I had reps and repair folk out to my boat. All corrected and at Catalinas expense. Have to give my dealer (Masthead) the credit for setting it up but still....I'm so very frustrated for you!
Ok I'll go have an eggnog and chill....

Suzie: Have one for me...It's been about 60 days since I notified the dealer of the problems and I finally received a phone call and letter from Frank Butler, which I will post along with other photos that have been sent to Catalina and the dealer.

Gel coat crazing or spider cracks, according to Don Casey are caused by underlying stress on the laminates that cause the damamge to the gel coat.

I started trying to figure out what could have caused my boat to suffer such stress. I found photos I took the first day I saw the boat after it was delivered to the dealer the previous day.

They showed black marking and damage to the gel coat on the bow and bow cradles on the trailer and the boat was secured to the trailer with polypropelyne rope during the delivery trip on a yacht transport.

It is easy to arrive at the fact that the boat was moving vertically and laterally on the trailer during transport given the damage to the bow which would indicate that there was stress and flexing of the hull during the trip from Woodland Hills to Lake Tahoe.

The bow was moving approximately 12 inches up and down while on the trailer. We all know what happens when something restrained by a line comes to the end of that line, it rebounds back in the opposite direction. The poly rope was stretching and rebounding during the entire trip.

No one representing Catalina has taken the time to look at the boat and evaluate the damage and try to determine if there is underlying structural damamge, there may be and there may not be, but I would think they would want to know.

Then I remembered what they told Jerry (Frog) about the damage to his boat from the delivery...that it would only take 2 to 3 hours of work to repair it...sounds a lot like "minor gel coat crazing" to me...Jerry ordered a NEW boat and should have received a new boat, which he ultimately did...I ordered a NEW boat also, not one that was in need of re-conditioning and repairs upon delivery.

I'm drafting a letter to Mr. Butler and will post it after I review it a couple of times. At that point I will also post the entire incident on the forum for informational purposes....Dan #727
