I still hang on to my subscription to Sail since as an annual charterer I find their big boat cruising articles to be a way of holding me over between Carribean sailing junkets.
I dropped Practical Sailor because I found that some of their reports proved contrary to what I experienced with some of the products they panned, they charged a hell of a lot for the amount of content they provide, and some of the articles on the stuff they rate are just plain trite. The last straw for me was quite a few years ago when they spent a good part of an (expensive) issue rating floating flashlights.
There's a semi local magazine, "Offshore", which although is not strictly a sailing mag, provides a lot of interesting local boating stories and info on a wide variety of subjects including cruising, marinas in the northeast, tech articles, and even fishing. I find their relaxed editorial content pleasing as well.
I subscribe to Sail & Cruising World although we may drop one next year. We dropped Practical Sailor a couple years ago after subscribing 3 years because we had made most of the major purchases for our almost-new boat & weren't getting much value from the articles. I am very disgusted that the current issue of Cruising World has the "22 Best Boats for 2004" and not one is under 35'! To their credit they did a great article on small pocket cruisers this fall. I like Chesapeake Bay magazine for local travel ideas. We read Spinsheet (Chesapeake Bay area publication) as well.
I also read US News & World Report. Dan gets Fine Woodworking. We just dropped our Rodale's Scuba Diving subscription becuase we don't dive much anymore & didn't care for the recent format change (since this isn't a diving forum I won't rant about the changes here.
I continue to get Sail for most of the reasons others have dropped it. It has articles on boats I'll never own, places I'll never go, and a way of life I'll never live. Lots of places they go are places I would never go if I had a chance...the northern fiords, dodging ice bergs...I don't think so. Single handed on a 25' boat to Australia...count me out there, too. Having said that, I do enjoy reading about those good folks out on these adventures...from the comfort, safety and warmth of my recliner.
