Oh, this winter passage... So, my day job is done, and now a quick run up to the boat to check on things. I have a "Cruising Design" furling jib on my 25' with two spools at the base. One line to retrieve, the second to let out. Well, it works ok if I'm paying attention, but I have never seen this. Ok, so this is my first time with a boat that has someone's rig...and I don't get it! There is no cowl to the arrangement, and the problem is fouling on the retrieve of the jib. Anywone seen one of these before? This can't be right. Did the CDI webpage and with no visual luck to product. Anybody see two drums on a furling jib? Got to be a collector's thingy. What say you?
My cdi furler has a "2 line system, one for retrieval, and the appropriate jib sheet to pull the sail out. Works well, I'm not sure I can see how a two line system, like you described would work.
I have an old CDI furler with the aluminum pieces and the built in halyard. I use the upper spool on the drum to wrap the halyard around and the lower one for the furling line.
After I used it a few times with the furling line falling off the drum, I realized I was missing the wire bails that keep the furling line in place. I was also missing half the bottom bearing. No wonder it was a real pain to use. Now it's working great. It still helps to keep a little tension on the furling line as you pull on the jib sheet to unfurl it.
Are there two separate lines going to the drum or is it just one continuous line that loops back to the cockpit?
If it does have two separate lines, how many hands does it take to unfurl your genoa?...three?
When letting out my genoa with my single line furler, I haul in my jib sheet while keeping a hand on my furling line to prevent any kinking. This keeps me fairly busy with my two hands, but if a third line were thrown into the mix...oh, boy!
