I have self tailing Barient 17's on my boat. I am considering replacing the 3/8 sheets with 7/16. Does anyone know if the 17 will accept the 7/16 or is that going too large for it to handle? Thanks
Matt: I'm really NOT that kind of sailor, big boy. Actually, my wife named the boat. I had taken a new position in my work which got me a promotion to sergeant, but resulted in 60 hour weeks for over 3 years. Eventually (I'm a slow learner), I decided it wasn't worth it, and asked to go back to my old job. I had to take a demotion to corporal, but found with 40 hour weeks again, I had time to take up sailing again. She said the boat was my punishment for becoming a corporal. The name did get me a new t-shirt when it placed 3rd in Good Old Boat magazine's name contest a few months ago. Now, not only does my boat have a neat name, I am also a natty dresser.
Brooke: 1. Yes. 2. In the water. 3. I am among sailors more full of BS than me, and their stories have been known to spawn F2 tornados here. 4. Of course. 5. Because I am pure of heart and fearless.
Is it true all the boats in that race have side air bags?
I once took 3rd place in the Winnebago Cup. I think I did poorly because the swim ladder/door step was extended, and the jib sheets kept getting caught in the satellite dish.
Boy, I wish I had all those stars after my name. You guys must be really old!
Maybe it is just me, but it has been my experience that diffrent size lines not only feel different to the hand, but they handle differently coming off a winch tacking, going thru the blocks, tailing, and finally dressing up after the tack. Some seem smooth as silk, while others are just a hand full to mess with. May also be new line vs. old (read experienced)line. I already have the 7/16 but wasn't too thrilled on how it worked during the month or so I got to use it. My last boat had 3/8 which worked well during the 2 years, but it was on a different winch with a smaller jib. Just wondered if the 7/16 was over kill.
Speaking of over kill, thanks for the kind words Stu. I decided the job might not be worth it when friends start asking you if you are OK because you don't look so good. Then, when people who are supposed to not like you come up to you and ask about your health and well being because you don't look so good-- as the blonde said, "Helloooo?" Ever notice you never see a luggage rack on a hearse? Stress level went back to about 2 on the 10 stress-o-meter scale. The fact that I still don't look so good has to do with age. I can live with that.
